UPDATE:15:00 A multi-vehicle car accident on the south-bound lane of the M18 motorway, on the Ennis side of Crusheen early today (Tuesday) resulted in the road being closed for over an hour. The crash occurred at approximately 7.30am and resulted in major diversions while the scene was being cleared and gardaí investigated. No one was seriously injured in the crash. Drivers heading from Ennis to Galway were initially asked to divert at the Tulla road junction, while, those travelling from Galway to Ennis as asked to divert at Gort through Tubber. However the route has since reopened. This morning’s crash is understood to have involved cars stopping to help a motorist who had skidded before a further vehicle skidded in the slippery conditions. Well known publican and former county councillor, John Minogue from Tulla has died. Elected to Clare County Council on five separate occasions, serving over 30 years as an Independent county councillor, John Minogue was also a well known publican in Tulla village. His premises was a great meeting point for GAA supporters on big match days at Dr Tommy Daly Park, as well as a venue for music sessions and social occasions. He died on Monday, having been unwell for the last number of months. He has also been an avid supporter of the GAA and collector of GAA memorabilia. John Minogue has been described as a “pillar of the local community” in his native Tulla by the Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council Councillor, John Crowe. Councillor Crowe said, “John represented the Killaloe Electoral Area from 1960 to 1991. He was always honest and hard working for the people he represented. A 30 year old man has appeared before a sitting of Ennis District Court this Thursday in connection with an alleged hit and run incident at Knockadoon, Tulla on October 28 last. James O’Donoghue with an address at Bay 8, Lynch’s Lane, Clondalkin, Dublin 2, appeared before Judge Aeneas McCarthy on Thursday charged with a single charge of dangerous driving at Knockadoon on October 28. Inspector Tom Kennedy, prosecuting, outlined that the State would allege that the accused was involved “in a hit and run incident in which the defendant crashed his car into another vehicle, he then left the scene and later turned up at hospital”. Garda Darren McLoughlin of Scariff garda station gave evidence of arresting the defendant, charging him and administering the relevant caution. Gardaí launched a search operation this morning for the driver of a car involved in the two-car collision near Tulla, as he was believed to have fled the scene on foot. The driver of the other vehicle,a man in his sixties, who was seriously injured, was brought to University Hospital Limerick. Emergency services were called to the two-car collision at Knockadoon, on the main Tulla to Scariff Road, shortly before 7.30am.  The road was closed for a number of hours for a technical examination. A garda search for the missing driver of the second car was to no avail. However, a man later presented himself for treatment at Midwestern Hospital Ennis, and enquiries are being being made as to whether this was linked to the accident.  

TWO men involved in cultivating cannabis with a potential value of €326,600 at a rented house in Tulla earlier this year have received jail sentences and could end up serving their time in a Polish prison. Rafal Ucinek (26) and Emil Sumczynski (24), both with an address at Miltown, Tulla, appeared before a sitting of Limerick Circuit Court on Friday last, where they were each sentenced on a charge of cultivating cannabis on January 13 last. Judge Carroll Moran imposed a four-year prison sentence on Ucinek and a two-year jail term on Sumczynski, which he ordered to be backdated to January 13 last, when they were first taken into custody. Judge Moran said the charge of cultivation carried a maximum sentence of 14 years, which “is a very considerable sentence”. Recalling the facts in the case, Judge Moran said, “As a result of confidential information, the gardaí obtained a warrant to search a house near Tulla. At 10.10pm on January 13, …

A 17 year- old East Clare girl was lucky not to lose her eye after being shot with a pellet gun by another teen in Tulla on Friday. The incident occurred on the village’s Main Street at approximately 3.30pm, when the secondary school student was shot by a male of a similar age while she was standing outside a local shop. Gardai say that the shot was fired from a car and that the plastic bearing struck the girl in the face. A senior garda in Killaloe said the girl “was very lucky not to lose an eye”.  She was treated by a doctor but did not require hospitalisation. It is understood that gardai spoke with the male teenager and the pellet gun has been seized by gardai and will not be retured. Gardai have advised that although these pellet guns are legal they are “dangerous when fired indiscriminately in the direction of a person”. Carol Byrne

TULLA Vintage Organisation (T.V.O.) will hold the second Pat O’Halloran Memorial this Sunday September 7 giving the East Clare community an opportunity to check out the best vintage models around. The event is once again being staged in O’Halloran’s Field, Church Road, Tulla, from 12 noon and this year’s main beneficiary is Sláinte an Chláir, which will see funds donated staying in the East Clare area. A display of vintage tractors, classic cars, motorbikes will parade through the town led by the Tulla Pipe Band from 1pm, while a host of stationary engines will be on display throughout the day at O’Halloran’s field. Due to the success of the Vintage Day last year and to the generous support of you the people; Tulla Vintage Organisation was in a position to donate €4,290 to the Jack and Jill Foundation and €4,290 to the Tulla Tidy Towns Committee. The third annual  Féile Cnoc na Gaoithe gets underway in Tulla on the last weekend of this month. Celebrating fiddle music, with fiddle workshops, competitions and recitals, the cast is headed up by the legendary fiddle-player, Maurice Lennon, with Liam O’Connor, Anton MacGabhann, Bernadette Nic Gabhann and local legendary fiddle-player, Vincent Griffin. The festival highlights include a performance by Maurice Lennon. His father, Ben Lennon, is well-known as a master of the Leitrim style of traditional fiddle and his uncle, Charlie Lennon, is renowned as a composer, piano accompanist and fiddler. At 19, Maurice became the youngest person to win the Senior Fiddle Championship at the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil, held in Ennis in 1977. Shortly after this, he joined with three other All-Ireland champions to form Stockton’s Wing, with local Clare musicians, Kieran Hanrahan, Paul Roche and Tommy Hayes, with whom he composed, recorded and performed for the next 27 years.
