ST Joseph’s Secondary School in Tulla were this week treated to a lunchtime concert by a young group of visiting traditional musicians from Vermont in the United States. The Young Tradition Touring Group, made up of 19 musicians aged between 12 and 19, are currently touring the West of Ireland and have stopped in Clare for performances in The Powerhouse in Tulla, Pepper’s and Shortt’s in Feakle. The group play North American traditional tunes, as well as Appalachian music, Cajun and some bluegrass. They also dance during their performances. The musicians are being hosted in Clare by Mary MacNamara and her group of young East Clare musicians. As part of this, they performed a lunchtime concert in the secondary school in Tulla on Wednesday for students and teachers. The sudden and untimely death of Matthew Corry, Tyreda, Tulla has caused widespread shock, particularly in his native parish. A well known and popular member of the community, he was a keen sportsman and prominent member of the Tulla GAA club with whom he played at all levels before going on to serve the club as a team mentor with a number of club sides including managing their senior team. He won intermediate hurling championship honours with Tulla and also helped the club to a Clare Champion Cup (senior hurling league) victory. He played under 21 hurling for Clare in the early 1980s and went on to secure selection on the county senior panel. Matthew is survived by his wife Martha, son Callum, daughter Savannah, mother Annie, brothers Eddie, Pat, Denis and Jim, sisters Mary and Ann, extended family and a wide circle of friends. More than a thousand people from one East Clare village passed through Ellis Island on their way to a new life in the United States, according to research undertaken on the parish. An online exhibition exploring the Irish emigration experience to America was launched in Tulla at the weekend and focuses on the town’s emigrants and diaspora. The community was chosen as the pilot parish for a research project undertaken by the nationwide organisation, Ireland Reaching Out, with the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, as part of the Government’s Emigrant Support Programme. The results of the research and the findings of the study were launched in Tulla Courthouse last Friday. As well as the online resource, a curated exhibition featuring eight emigrants was hosted as part of the Tulla Reaching Out Weekend of Welcomes, an annual festival that celebrates local heritage and welcomes the diaspora back into the parish. INTERNATIONAL visitors with an interest in their ancestral past are expected to converge on Tulla this weekend for the Weekend of the Welcomes. The event, which runs from this Friday to Sunday, has proven popular with those who want to reconnect with their ancestral parish through the Ireland Reaching Out project, which the Tulla Reaching Out committee is actively involved in. Jane Halloran Ryan of Tulla Reaching Out said last year 15 individual visitors from Australia, the USA, the UK and Ireland came to Tulla to trace their ancestral roots and this year they are expecting 22. “This will be the third year. We started it two years ago for The Gathering and it has grown every year. Clare County Council, as an agent of Irish Water, are currently carrying out works to repair a burst main in the Tulla area. The burst main may result in temporary disruption to the water supply in Tulla, O’Callaghan’s Mills and surrounding areas.  Group Water Schemes in the area are also affected. Clare County Council says it expects to complete the works by 10am tomorrow, Thursday

IF she ever feels tempted to dig into a packet of biscuits, Niamh McMahon heads upstairs and eyes a top, hanging loosely on the back of her bedroom door in Flagmount. When she was six stone heavier, she regularly pulled on this top. These days, Niamh and her husband, Seán, would fit into it but not into her size 12 to 14 tops that she wears now. “That’s the size I was. I wore it for Jamie’s communion three years ago. That’s what is keeping me motivated, looking at that. Every time I feel like I want to eat something, I go upstairs and look at the top,” the 40-year-old Tulla woman and mother-of-three confirmed. Her journey to losing six stones started in January 2014, when Niamh joined the Weight Watchers class at Maria Assumpta Hall in Ennis. People in Tulla have been left devastated by the tragic death of a young civil engineer, according to a local councillor. Councillor Joe Cooney said the death of Cathal Torpey (33) following a traffic accident in Cork had rocked communities in East Clare. The Torpey family is very well known from its involvement in GAA and local groups. His uncle, Brian Torpey, was principal of Tulla National School before he retired. “It is a terrible blow for Tulla and East Clare to see a young man die in the prime of his life. This is a very sad, tragic death,” he said. Tulla GAA Club has extended it deepest sympathy to Cathal’s mother, Margaret; sister, Oonagh; girlfriend, Kate, his family and friends. Before leaving for New Zealand in 2007, Cathal was ever-present on Tulla hurling teams. In fact, he played at wing-forward on the Tulla team that won the Minor A Hurling Championship in 2000. Kilmaley 3-17 Eire Og 2-5 A well drilled and well balanced Kilmaley bridge a forty year gap to their only previous success in the competition when they accounted for Eire Og in the under 21 A hurling championship final at Cusack park on Saturday afternoon. In the opening game of this double bill, a physically stronger Tulla side claimed the B title when they had a one goal victory over Cratloe. When Eire Og went a goal clear in the seventh minute of the A final, there were some anxious faces amongst the Kilmaley following in the attendance of 1,527. The anxiety was shortlived as the favourites stormed into the game and hit nine unanswered points to lead by six with seven minutes still to play in the half.
