St. Flannans 1-14 De La Salle, Macroom 1-13 Clare football received a great boost this week when St. Flannans qualified for the Frewan cup (Munster colleges junior A football championship) final thanks to a one point win over De La Salle, Macroom. An outstanding performance from Philip Talty who kicked 0-8 from play played a key role in this win which has given the Ennis side a place in the final against St. Brendans Killarney or Colaiste Chriost Ri from Cork. St.Flannans found themselves three points in arrears with less than three minutes played but they kicked the next five to take a two point lead and they went on to open a 0-10 to 0-5 lead as half time approached. THE mother of a seriously ill boy is making a last-ditch attempt to find a second level school place for her eldest son in Ennis following the rejection of her appeal by the Department of Eduction. Anne Marie O’Donoghue and her husband, Sean, who live on the main Ennis to Ruan road, are at their wits end trying to secure a school place for their 12-year-old son, Cian, while at the same time looking after six-year-old Evan, who is suffering from , a serious kidney disorder. Ironically, a school bus collects his sister from right outside their door to bring her to the all girls Coláiste Muire in Ennis. Cian is academically bright and loves hurling, and his preference for secondary school is St Flannan’s College in his own catchment area, the school where all of his former Ruan Primary School schoolmates were lucky enough to secure first year places. “Cian really wants to go to St Flannan’s with all …

MUNSTER and Ireland rugby star Keith Earls was among the interested parties at  Shannon Airport terminal this week,  as more than 700 young people from around the country gathered to look at solutions for how people will live, work, play, learn, shop and travel in 2064. With support and mentoring from Irish Technology Leadership Group (ITLG) investors, the Irish dragons Barry O’Sullivan, Peter Casey, Gavin Duffy and Sean O’Sullivan as well as Dell’s Entrepreneur in Residence Ingrid Vanderveldt, the students competed for an array of prizes with the overall honours going to Limerick school Castletroy College. A number of Clare schools took part, including St Flannan’s. TRANSITION year students of St Flannan’s College are ‘banking’ on continuing last year’s success in the AIB Build a Bank Challenge. Last year the school made it to the regional finals of the competition, and by all ‘accounts’ this year’s efforts are also on the money. The six students have been running their own school bank, with the support of the AIB, while also learning about managing their own business. This year’s banking team at the school involves Gerard Kennedy, manager; Cian Murphy, assistant manager; Jane Fitzgerald, financial controller; Nina Koistinen, sales and marketing executive and Michael Ryan and Colin Reidy, both customer care representatives. According to 15 year-old Nina, more than 60 students at the school have already opened up an account with the school bank, with that figure expected to grow even more. With a number of the history-making senior side in their line up, St Flannan’s took on St Mary’s Charleville in the junior A decider at Fr Murphy Park but, despite a strong performance in very difficult weather conditions, they had to give best to the visitors The winners defended superbly when playing against the strong breeze in the second half and this proved decisive on the day when they failed to register a score in the second period. The Charleville outfit elected to play with the breeze in the opening half and for the opening twenty minutes there was nothing between the sides. St Flannan’s, Ennis 4-9 Laurel Hill, Limerick 0-8 ST Flannan’s College, long known for the prowess of its hurling teams, added a new dimension to their sporting achievements on Saturday afternoon. The senior camogie team are in the limelight following their Munster Colleges A title victory, a first for the school. A solid defence, the ability to take scores when needed, plus outstanding goalkeeping by Doireann Murphy, saw St Flannan’s in control throughout and return from Ballybricken/Bohermore GAA grounds with the silverware. With the underfoot conditions soft, St Flannan’s opened the scoring in the fourth minute through midfielder Aoife Keane. Laurel Hill’s Kate Mulqueen levelled matters when she converted a free just over a minute later. St Flannan’s won the resulting puckout and with the ball laid off to Amie Wiley, the Clarecastle youngster made no mistake as she split the posts to grab the lead for the Ennis school, a lead that was not relinquished.
