THE problems that have blighted Rathkeale must not be allowed to recur just 40 miles away in the parish of Clarecastle, according to Councillor Paul Murphy. On Wednesday, Councillor Murphy showed The Clare Champion the huge amount of waste left behind at a site just off the Skehanagh roundabout, where there had been an illegal encampment. “For the likes of Clarecastle as a village, a lot of people are concerned that it is becoming overrun and that we could have another Rathkeale on our hands in a few years time. It is compounded by the lawlessness that you witness here, it is a big worry for a community to have this on our doorstep. We have estate management problems in our village, along with Ennistymon and other places, it’s not just Clarecastle; but it’s a huge, huge concern for a community,” he commented. In a game in which they were never behind, the accounted for the defending champions St.Augustines from Dungarvan in front of a good attendance After the sides had exchanged points twice, the East Clare side opened a five point gap by the eighth minute, helped by the game’s opening goal which came from Mark Rodgers. Fergus Madden found the net at the start of the second quarter as the Sean McNamara managed Clare side went on to lead by six points, 2-8 to 1-5, at the interval. In the opening ten minutes of the second half the Waterford side struck for two goals in response to two points for the new champions and this left just two points between the sides with twenty minutes to play. …

Martin Keenan, who won his first Irish title three years ago in the colours of Ennis Boxing Club, hit the headlines on Friday night in the National Stadium when he captured the Irish Elite Super-heavyweight title in style, to etch his name in Clare’s sporting history. It was a big surprise for the unranked, unheralded Ennis lad, who went from strength to strength in these championships and totally upset the odds that were stacked against him from the outset three weeks ago. He is the first Clare fighter to reach the podium since James Clancy won the heavyweight title back in the 1990s for Kilfenora, with Ennis boxing legend Ollie Markham in his corner. Keenan took a 4-1 split decision over Thomas Carty from the Glasnevin club in a torrid battle, after recovering from an indifferent first round, in which he found Carty’s southpaw reach virtually impenetrable. St. Brendans, Killarney 2-17 St. Flannans 1-11 St. Brendans Killarney jusified their ratingas favourites for the Munster colleges senior A football championship title (Corn Ui Mhuiri) when they recorded a marited win over St. Flannans at Neville park in Rathkeale on Saturday. An outstanding performance from midfielder David Shaw \9Dr. Crokes) who missed the side’s quarter final as he was overseas taking part in AFL trials, laid the foundation for this victory by the competition title holders. Shaw kicked six points from play and had a hand in many of the team’s scpores on a day when their movement proved too much for the Clare side. The winners raised into a three point lead inside the opening five minutes and from here on St. Flannans were chasing the game.
