His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales explored the rare flowers of the Burren in the company of local farmers, schoolchildren, conservation staff and volunteers this afternoon. During the visit, Prince Charles learned about the Burren Farming for Conservation Programme (FCP), an award-winning agri-environment programme, which is funded by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. He was also introduced to the work of the Burrenbeo Trust, a local charity which co-ordinates a number of community-led education and conservation initiatives. The Prince was welcomed by Dr Brendan Dunford, manager of the Burren FCP Programme, and introduced to some of the unique botanical, geological and archaeological features of the Burren. Nicola Corless Security around Clare and Galway is high today as the final preparations are being made for the two-day official visit of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall to the Republic of Ireland. A senior garda described the visit as “at the top of the scale” in terms of security. He said an incident was “possible but not likely” and there was no information about a “specific threat”. Security zones will be in place around each area the royal couple are scheduled to visit and there is a heavy garda presence across South Galway and North Clare, as well as in Oranmore and Galway City, in particular close to NUI Galway. Prince Charles is set to visit the Burren later today where he will meet local farmers and conservationists and take a walking tour of a farm there. Britain’s Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will visit the Burren during their upcoming visit to the Republic and Northern Ireland later this month. The couple will attend an event at NUI Galway on 19 May, after which Prince Charles will visit the Marine Institute and the Burren. A private dinner with President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina will also take place. The Prince and Duchess of Cornwall will travel to Sligo on 20 May, where they will visit the grave of WB Yeats. They will also visit Mullaghmore where the prince’s great-uncle, Lord Mountbatten was killed in an IRA bomb attack in 1979. Prince Charles was in Northern Ireland last year and in 2013. He has only been south of the border on official visits twice – in 1995 and in 2002.
