Two violent historical episodes in the years after Irish civil war are investigated by north Clare writer WHILE the Civil War ended in 1923, the division and bitterness remained for decades after. The fallout from the conflict forms the background to historian Joe Queally’s book, Echoes from a Civil War, which is about to be launched. It looks at two incidents in the years that followed; firstly the killing of Garda Thomas Dowling, a Kilkenny man, who was shot four times in Fanore on December 28, 1925, by people who ambushed him from inside a stonewall next to the graveyard in the townland of Craggagh. Four years later on June 11, 1929, in Tullycrine in the parish of Kilmurry McMahon, Garda Timothy (Tadgh) O’Sullivan, a Corkman, was blown to pieces by a bomb on the roadside. THE RNLI Lifeboat fundraising schedule, like that of every other charity, has taken a big hit over the past six months with little or no income coming in to keep the fleet afloat. Clare has been at the helm in fundraising down the years, and in coming up with new fundraising ideas to involve people in walks, rambles, cruises, concerts and many more events. Over the past six months, the lifeboats have been as busy as ever and have answered every call to save lives and bring people back to their homes and loved ones. The Burren Ramble, which takes place at this time every year, has to be called off as has the Cruise to Galway Bay from Doolin pier. The risk is too high in Clare to put anyone at risk. THE RNLI Lifeboats has unveiled that schedule for their up-coming walks in Clare. Fr Ger Fitzgerald from Ennis joined a team of lifeboat supporters in the Burren for the formal launch. First up on the very busy schedule is Sunday when the Hills of Ayleroe in Kildysart will be the location for a 8km stroll through the beautiful country side in West Clare. Regestration for this event is at 3pm in Cyril Reidy’s field in Aylroe, with a 3.30pm start. For people who may not know the area well, Ayleroe is situated four miles on the coast road through Kildysart to Lababsheeda. The Burren Ramble is next on the list and this will take place on Sunday, September 14 with base camp at the car park at Fanore beach, with regestration at 12.30 pm for a 1pm start. The scene then switches to East Clare, when Broadford and its surrounds will provide the place for a walk through the highways …
