Gardaí have advised motorists to slow down and drive with care as rain, sleet and hail over the past couple of days has led to treacherous road conditions. On Thursday afternoon there were a number of crashes on both the northbound and southbound carriages of the M18 motorway between Crusheen and Gort. The incidents resulted in road closures and diversions. Met Éireann is warning there may be more bad weather to come.

A 42 year old pedestrian was left in a critical condition following a crash in Ennis last night (Wednesday). The crash happened around 10pm on the Gort Road, at the small roundabout which is close to the Midwestern Regional Hospital Ennis and McDonald’s. Gardaí say that a car approaching from the Gort side struck a car that was stopped on the roundabout. The first car then careered onwards, mounted the pavement and struck the pedestrian. The man was  taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick. His injuries are understood to be life threatening. The occupants of the second car, two females aged in their 60s, were also taken to University Hospital Limerick. Their injuries are no thought to be life threatening. The occupants in one of the cars, two males aged 25 and 19 years, fled the scene on foot. They were followed and apprehended by an off duty garda, before being arrested a short distance away. Gardaí will have a strict traffic plan in place for the funeral in Killaloe tomorrow (Friday) of Munster and Ireland rugby star, Anthony Foley. The funeral mass will take place at St Flannan’s Church, Killaloe at 12 noon, with burial after in Relig Nua graveyard. A one way system will be in place around Killaloe along the R463 with the junction of Killaloe Bridge, to Abbey Street Covent Hill, right onto Crossroads, Thomas Street, Chapel Street, left onto New Street and back onto the main Scariff Road – R463. To enable the free flowing of the one way system the following junctions will be closed off to traffic: ·         New Street/ Main Street junction ·         Thomas/Chapel Street junction ·         St Flannan’s Road / Main Street junction ·         St Flannan’s Road/ Covent Hill junction ·         New Street / Ogonnelloe Road junction ·         The Green / main Killaloe square will be free of all traffic for the rest of Thursday and Friday.     An Ennis man, who was reported missing for nine days, has been found safe and well on Saturday afternoon. The family of Aaron Lysaght (21)  had  issued an appeal for the public’s assistance in tracing the whereabouts of their son who went missing from Prospect, Coolcullen, County Kilkenny. The last visual sighting of Aaron Lysaght (21) was on July 1 when he was visiting a friend in Midleton, County Cork. All other contact after this date was by phone or text message up until July 14 when he sent his father, Seán a text message via WhatsApp at 7.51 am. Gardaí were trying to establish whether Aaron remained in the Midleton area or whether he travelled back to Castlecomer where he was living with his girlfriend for about three months. The body of a man found on the shoreline at Aughinish, Kinvara on Sunday evening last been identified as an 86-year-old retiree who was last seen near Salthill on June 17. A post mortem is due to take place tomorrow (Thursday) at Limerick Regional Hospital. On Sunday, gardaí in Gort received a report that the body of a male was found washed up on the rocks at Aughinish, Kinvara. When they went to the scene, they found the body. A local doctor was called and he was pronounced dead at 10pm at scene.

A person has been arrested as part of an operation targeting prostitution in the Mid-West region, following Garda searches in Ennis and Limerick in recent weeks. Ennis gardaí involved in the operation carried out a series of searches of premises in the town and on the back of this, one person was arrested last weekend. A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecution in relation to the matter. Clare gardaí are working in conjunction with other garda divisions across the Mid-West as part of the operation and their investigations are ongoing. By Carol Byrne

TWO people have been arrested following an incident at a funeral in Shannon on Sunday, while parish priest Fr Tom Ryan said lives could have been lost but for the intervention of the gardaí. Martin ‘Red Breast’ McDonagh died last Wednesday night and was reposing in Shannon on Sunday before his funeral, which took place in Ballyhaunis, County Mayo on Monday. It is understood that a row broke out close to Ss John and Paul Church, in which a number of people, associated with two separate families, were involved. No arrests were made in relation to this. Shortly afterwards, one vehicle rammed into another at traffic lights close to Aidan Park. Another vehicle, owned by a party not connected with the dispute, was also damaged. A vehicle was seized at the Old Lodge shortly afterwards and one person arrested. A second person was subsequently arrested. THE theft of village signage has been described as “epidemic” by local Councillor Pat Hayes, who highlighted that signs have been stolen in four villages in East Clare. Councillor Hayes said Feakle, Caher, Flagmount and Killanena have had signage taken. He said some thefts have occurred in recent weeks, while others were some time ago. He said it is not the directional signage, which is usually the common problem, but in this case it is the larger signs for the villages themselves. “It seems to be specific to this side of the county. Directional signposts are also missing. The GAA one in Caher was taken down and a couple of business ones were taken as well. It seems to be an epidemic for the last while. I would very much be appealing to the public out there. There might be huge value in those signs but it is the communities that put them up and maintain them. They are part …
