Gardaí have arrested a man in his 30s in relation to an attempted burglary at a business premises in Ennis on Thursday. Shortly before 2am, Gardaí from Ennis Garda Station received a report of a man trying to gain entry to a business premises on Barrack Street in Ennis. Gardaí attended the scene and were able to ascertain details of the man believed to have been involved. His details were circulated to all Gardaí in the area and a man in his 30s was arrested a short time later. He was brought to Ennis Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Gardaí have arrested five men in their late teens and early 20s, in relation to a burglary at a phone shop on O’Connell Street, Ennis in the early hours of this morning (Monday). Shortly before 2.30am, Gardaí in Ennis received a report of a burglary that had just occurred in which a grey car was seen leaving the area. Gardaí located the suspect car and carried out a managed pursuit. The car was abandoned on Ballyalla Grove and the occupants fled in different directions. One man was arrested by Gardaí and is currently detained at Ennis Garda Station. A search of the car was carried out and Gardaí recovered a large quantity of mobile phones that had been stolen. Gardaí put a cordon in place in the surrounding areas and a car was stopped on the Gort Road at around 5.30am. The body of a woman discovered in Ennis town centre in the early hours of Tuesday morning has been removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem is due to be carried out. Gardai in Ennis have launched an investigation after the woman in her 40s was found at the Riverwalk area of the town at around 6am. According to Superintendent Brendan McDonagh of Ennis Garda Station there is no indication of foul play at this moment, however they are awaiting the results of the post mortem. CCTV cameras are being examined as part of the investigation. Gardai are appealing to anybody who saw the lady walking the Parnell Street, Woodquay or Riverwalk area of the town between 10pm and 6am Monday night / Tuesday morning to contact them on 065 6848100. .

A PAINTING by a young Clare artist and student of the Ennis Art School has been brought to life as part of a new television commercial. The painting by young Laurie Hehir, aged seven, was chosen to illustrate the promotion of the closing date for receipt of entries in the 2020 Texaco Children’s Art Competition. Her teacher, local artist Carmel Doherty told us, “This is a massive achievement for Laurie, her parents are delighted and very proud of her. She’s a very nice kid, full of beans and really creative. It’s marvellous to see her art work on the screen.” Screened here and in Northern Ireland throughout the months of January and February, its purpose will be to notify young artists, parents and teachers that the 66th Competition is underway. The commercial’s storyline centres upon Laurie’s painting of ‘Bobby’, her grandfather’s Friesian cow for which she was awarded a prize in the competition last year. Gardaí attended the scene of a fatal road traffic collision on the N68 Kilrush to Ennis road today, (Friday) at approximately 4pm. The incident involved a collision between a car and a truck. The driver of the car, a female in her 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was later taken to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem will take place. The driver of the truck was not injured. Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information, particularly any road users travelling in the area at the time of the collision who may have camera footage to contact Kilrush Garda station on 065 9080550, the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

GARDAí have arrested a man in his late teens and seized approximately €2,000 in suspected counterfeit notes following searches in Ennis and Ennistymon today (Thursday). As part of an ongoing investigation, Gardaí from the Clare division carried out a search at two houses in Ennis and Ennisymon. During the search in Ennis, Gardaí seized 100 counterfeit €20 notes. A man in his late teens was arrested at the scene and is currently detained at Ennis Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Speaking at Ennis Garda Station, Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Triona O’Rouke said: “We would like to remind businesses to ensure that staff carry out essential checks on any notes, regardless of the denomination. “Check the obvious security features before accepting notes, including the watermark, security thread, hologram patch and raised print. By taking the time to feel, examine and tilt the notes, businesses can prevent taking the loss to your business.”

THE tragic loss of a number of people in the Cloughleigh area of Ennis this year has been the inspiration for the holding of a special concert of remembrance next month. Acclaimed singer / songwriter Kieran Goss will be the headline act for the concert in Cloughleigh Community Centre on December 6 which will also feature his wife Annie Kinsella, Damien Gormley, Siobhan Peoples and band The Citizens. The event, billed as a Concert of Remembrance and Hope has been organised by Fr Ger Fitzgerald along with a group of locals who knew many of those who have passed away. Proceeds from the event will be used to create a memorial to be erected outside Cloughleigh church. Fr Ger explained, “We have experienced in the last year or so a lot of people, young people in particular, that have passed away for one reason or another.
