Appeal for information on Old Military Barracks

AN Ennis man who has been soldiering on with the compilation of a history of the Old Military Barracks is making a final appeal for information to be included in the publication. William Crowley has been working on the publication since 2016 and it is hoped to be complete later this summer. He has already been inundated with information, as people from all over the world have got in touch with stories about growing up in the area on the Kilrush Road. With the book now nearing completion, William is putting out a last call to anyone who may have photographs, stories or any information they would like to see included in the publication. “I’ve got a good bit of detail over the last few years and I’m just putting the last details together. Ennis flood protection in danger without works to historic structure

THE collapse of an historic famine era feat of engineering could “undermine” the flood protection of Ennis the county capital’s mayor has warned. Councillor Johnny Flynn has called for funds to be provided for the repair of the Ballyhee Cut, just north of Ballyalla Lake. Speaking at a meeting of the Ennis Municipal District he outlined, “This historic piece of cut stone civil engineering works is in a poor condition and at serious risk of further deterioration.” He sought backing from his fellow councillors to allow for any funding unspent from the General Municipal Allocation to be provided for repairs to the Ballyhee Cut. He commented, “This very important piece of civil engineering is being undermined.” Leonore O’Neill, senior executive office for the Ennis Municipal District agreed that the Ballyhee Cut is a “very important heritage item”. She stated that the structure has been affected by the growth of sycamore and that the repair of defects would require a large …

Gardaí in Ennis are seeking the public’s assistance in tracing the whereabouts of Daniel Ohiku, 17 years, who was last seen on Saturday April 18 at his home in Ennis. Daniel is described as being approximately 5’10” in height, of slim build with black curly hair. Ennis man shielding London’s front-line health workers from Covid-19

AN Ennis man living in London has been using his talents to ensure frontline staff at a hospital and care homes have access to protection against the spread of Covid-19. Eoin O’Sullivan, originally from the Golf Links Road has transformed his attic into a workshop where he has been making protective faceshields on 3D printers. He has been donating the much sought after equipment for free to a number of care homes and London’s St Helier’s hospital. The physics lecturer, a former pupil of Gaelcholaiste an Chláir, has been living in London for nearly four years and currently teaches at the University of Surrey. He explains that the idea came about when a friend of his, Jerry Naiker, told him about the shortage of protective faceshields at a local care home. “Jerry had a 3D printer at home but he knew I had a couple and asked if I’d be interested in producing them.” Since then the word has got …

Lions roar ahead in support of frontline health workers

THE Lions Club of Ennis are roaring in behind efforts to provide hundreds of thousands of face shields for frontline health workers throughout Ireland. Lions Clubs have pledged to raise up to €100,000 nationally to fund 200,000 ‘Hero Shield’ face visors which will be distributed free of charge to front line health workers throughout Ireland. Michael Neylon, president of Lions Club of Ennis has confirmed that the club will be getting involved with campaign, along with working to help local families in need as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Michael explains that all clubs in the district were contacted about the project and after remote consultation with members the Lions Club of Ennis will be making a donation. “At local level we have a few members engaging with vulnerable families who are in particular need during this Covid-19 crisis. Finding inspiration in isolation

THE children of Clare are being urged to find inspiration in staying at home and get involved in a countywide art competition being run on social media. The brainchild of Ennis based visual artist Rachel McManus the competition is free to enter and is open to all primary school children. The Clare Kids Art Competition is already proving popular with the county’s youngsters, with Rachel already wowed by the standard of entries. The theme of the competition is ‘My Life at Home’ with primary school children asked to create a work of art based on this idea. Rachel explained the inspiration behind the competition, “We are all navigating these unusual times as best as we can. It can be hard for kids not being able to go playgrounds, play with their friends and not being able to play sport or go to their normal activities. Ennis student award winning help for ELVES

AN Ennis art student has drawn on his talents to be named among the winners of a video animation competition. ELVES, the End-of-Life Vehicle compliance scheme and Limerick School of Art & Design LIT have announced the winners of their recent joint video animation competition. The purpose of the contest was to help ELVES www.elves.ie raise awareness about how End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) in Ireland should be processed properly. Mikey Cashell from Ennis was one of the winners in the competition. As the compliance scheme for the End-of-Life Vehicle sector, part of ELVES remit is to create public awareness about how people should correctly scrap their cars and small vans, once they are no longer roadworthy.  To help achieve this aim, ELVES partnered with Limerick School of Art and Design LIT to task some of its students with creating commercial standard video animations which would best convey this message. Murder charge follows incident in Ennis

  A SERIOUS incident in Ennis on Tuesday afternoon led to a 39-year-old- man appearing in court this Friday charged with the murder of a local man, Eoin Boylan.   At Ennis District Court, Nassar Ahmed of The Mews, Kilrush Road, Ennis appeared after being charged with the murder of mature student, Eoin Boylan, aged 32, at Gordon Drive, Cloughleigh, Ennis on April 14.   Mr Boylan was rushed to hospital after an incident at Gordon Drive on Tuesday afternoon, but died en route.   Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Detective Garda Noelle Bergin told the court that she arrested Mr Ahmed for the purpose of charge at 23.45 at Ennis Garda Station on Wednesday night.   The garda told the court that Mr Ahmed replied ‘Okay’ after being charged with the murder offence.   After reading the charge, Judge Mary Larkin told the court “this is a serious matter”. She granted legal aid to solicitor, John Casey …
