Davy Fitz – a Saffron Gael

As Davy Fitzgerald agrees terms with Antrim senior hurlers, Derek Dormer spoke with the Sixmilebridge man about his move, media begrudgery and following his instincts. The only manager in the history of the GAA to have won the top five competitions in hurling namely the All-Ireland, National League, Munster, Leinster and Fitzgibbon Cup titles will now embark on a new venture following his stepping down in what was his second stint as Waterford boss after two years at the helm. There was plenty of speculation that all the travelling played a part in Davy’s decision to step down after being offered an extension but the man himself explains he just wanted the summer off. “I’ve been on the road coaching teams for as long as I can remember. I really enjoyed my time as Waterford manager on both occasions. We definitely made huge progress and we came so close to qualifying for the All-Ireland series this year. “When I decided …

HURLING: Early Banner heatwave melts Wexford resolve in All-Ireland Championship Qualifier

All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Round 1 Qualifier Clare 2-25 Wexford 2-22 AS the championship heated up so did Clare after completing a hat-trick of championship knock-out victories over Wexford since 2018 in Semple Stadium, Thurles this afternoon, reports Eoin Brennan. It was a testament to all 40 players for providing such entertainment amidst a veritable sauna as Clare passed a true test of character with flying colours after feigning off an inevitable Wexford backlash. Davy Fitzgerald’s side had previously exited the championship at the hands of the Banner in two of the last three campaigns but far from being a motivational tool, they appeared to be suffering sunstroke in the opening quarter as a sharper Clare completely dominated proceedings with 1-7 without reply in just eleven minutes. The goal arrived in the ninth minute through the tireless Cathal Malone who made an excellent burst to finish to the roof of Mark Fanning’s net on their way to a 1-9 to …

Sixmilebridge GAA Club members speak out over ‘unbelievable’ online abuse

By Ronan Judge THE chairman of one of Clare’s biggest GAA clubs has called on the association to do more to stand up for employees who are the subject of online attacks. Chairman of Sixmilebridge GAA, Paddy Meehan, told The Clare Champion that some of the abuse directed at Clare County Board secretary Pat Fitzgerald, is “unbelievable.” Allegations of online abuse against Pat Fitzgerald are the subject of a garda investigation. Meehan says, “Pat Fitzgerald is a paid employee of the GAA and I don’t believe they have stood up for him and I don’t think they have backed him 100%. Maybe if employers start backing people… because you see it nowhere else. There was a case in Kerry there where a former soccer player was being abused and it went to court. It has to stop, this online abuse, people hiding behind computers. That’s where we’re coming from. I have often went to the Clare County Board, had issues …

Fitzy proud of his players

Clare manager Davy Fitzgerald told the post match press conference that he was extremely proud of his team. Clare drew the All-Ireland final, thanks to a dramatic injury time point from corner back Domhnall O’Donovan. When Pat Horgan gave Cork the lead in injury time it was the first time that the Jimmy Barry Murphy managed team had lead during what were 70 pulsating minutes. “It just showed what character and what steel is about. I am so proud of my guys. Whether they win, lose or draw the next day, I don’t give a damn. That’s being honest. There was a lot of tough things went against them out there today. I won’t say unfair. I could. But they still came back for more,” Fitzgerald said. “You think about it, three goals in the second half and we scored none. No matter what happens, I’m so, so proud of them. Will they get up to that height the next …
