Man impersonates garda to con woman out of cash

Gardai in Kilrush are investigating a burglary in which a man impersonated a garda to con a woman out of her money. The incident occurred between 6pm and 7pm last Saturday, September 3, in Cooraclare. The homeowner reported a male knocked on her door, informed her that he was a Garda and that he was there to check that her money was secure. The man then entered the house and the homeowner handed over two purses with a quantity of her cash inside; the man then left the scene. There was no damage to any property and the homeowner was not assaulted or threatened. The culprit is described as being approximately 60 years of age, wearing a face mask and denim jeans. Man with child steals cash from Ennis Cathedral office

Gardai are investigating a theft incident from the parish office at the Ennis Cathedral last week. A quantity of cash was stolen when two males (one adult and one child) entered the office on Tuesday August 2 at approximately 4pm. If anyone saw anything suspicious in the area around this time or anyone with any information can contact the Gardai at Ennis on 065-6848100. Meanwhile gardai are renewing their appeal for witnesses to an assault which occurred in the early hours of Monday morning August 1. The assault on a male in his 30s occurred at Parnell Street, Ennis between 2.30am and 4am. Anyone who was in the area or has any mobile phone or dash cam footage or has any nformation relating to this incident are asked to contact Gardai at Ennis Garda Station on 065-6848100.

Gardai probe attack at Clarecastle service station

GARDAI are investigating an attack on a local man which occurred at the Maxol Station close to the Clareabbey roundabout on Sunday morning. At some point between 11.30 and 11.45am the man arrived at the premises and entered the shop. Three other men in a grey Honda Civic then pulled into the premises. Two of these men, both with their faces covered, then entered the shop and attacked the local man with weapons. He sustained injuries, which, while not life threatening, were serious enough for him to be brought to hospital. A short time later a burning car was discovered at Ballaghboy, Doora. Gardai are investigating whether there was a link between this vehicle and the Clarecastle assault. They also carried out a forensic examination at the Maxol station, while they are reviewing CCTV and speaking to witnesses. Gardai appeal for witnesses to assault in Ennis

GARDAI are appealing for witnesses to an assault in Ennis town centre on Sunday night/Monday morning which left a man unconscious and needing hospital treatment. In the early hours of Monday morning at approximately 3.30am August 1, gardaí were alerted that a man was lying on the ground on Abbey Street. The man was unconscious and had blood covering his face. Medical assistance was immediately administered to this man and he was taken to University Hospital Limerick with non-life threatening injuries. The scene was preserved for technical examination. Clare crime prevention officer Sergeant Triona Brooks said, “There were large crowds of people on Abbey Street at this time and we are appealing to anyone who witnessed this assault or anyone who may have camera footage to contact Ennis Garda Station on 6848100.”

Ten years’ prison for significant player in Clare drugs trade

A MAN involved to a “significant level” in drug dealing in Clare has received a 10-year prison sentence. Paul Collopy (47) was part of a “sophisticated and well resourced drug trafficking operation”, Ennis circuit court heard. Judge Francis Comerford imposed the 10-year prison term on Collopy who was caught in possession of cannabis valued at €50,780 in a wooded area of the Carnelly House estate on April 16, 2021. Collopy, with an address at Childers Road, Cloughleigh, Ennis, and originally from Limerick, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis for sale or supply at a time when the value of the drugs amounted to €13,000 or more. In evidence, Detective Garda Paul Heaslip said the Clare divisional drugs unit, supported by members of the Garda armed support unit, excuted a warrant on the grounds of Carnelly House on the date in question. Man arrested after spate of thefts and break-ins in Ennis

A MAN in his mid-30s has been arrested for his suspected involvement in a number of thefts and break-ins in Ennis. Between July 21 and 22, a number of thefts and a burglary occurred in Clare’s county town. The owner of a car parked in Ennis General Hospital disturbed a male who had entered her car, while another car parked in Ennis Courthouse was also entered. A car parked on Cusack Road was also entered and cash was stolen from within. A black mountain bike was stolen from the side of a house in Lissaniska and a house in Fergus View was broken into and a laptop and cash stolen. On the morning of July 22, Gardaí were alerted and carried out enquiries and identified the suspect. A male in his mid-30s was arrested on suspicion of theft and detained at Ennis Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 Criminal Justice Act 1984. He was charged with theft and …

Cocaine seized during garda raid in Ennis

A MAN in his 20s was arrested in Ennis last Saturday in connection with a seizure of suspected cocaine. On Saturday, July 23 at 10.30am, the Divisional Drugs Unit conducted a search under warrant at a house in Ennis. During the course of this search approximately €3,000 worth of suspected Cocaine was seized. A male in his mid-20s was arrested at the scene and detained at Ennis Garda Station. This male has since been released from custody and a file is now being prepared for submission to the DPP. The suspected controlled substances have been forwarded to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis. These seizures form part of Operation Tara which is an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy. The focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks, at all levels – international, national, local – involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale and supply of controlled drugs.

Clare people warned over fake ‘HSE’ Covid text scam

GARDAI have warned of a scam text message in circulation purporting to be from the HSE. The text message is being sent to people saying that they have been in contact with someone who has Covid 19 variant. It then asks the person to follow instructions on a link in the text to order a testing kit. When you click on this link it brings you to a page where they require a fee to deliver through Fast Tracking Delivery and to book now. Anyone who receives this text should not click on the link and if you do, don’t enter any details. One reader who was in contact with the Clare Champion stated that at no time does the text say what the cost of the kit is, so one is open to any amount being taken from the account. The reader reported that the prefix of the phone number on the text was 089, but the text could …
