Clare students warned against becoming ‘money mules’

CLARE students are being warned about the “serious impact” of becoming a ‘money mule’ . A Money Mule is a person who transfers money illegally on behalf of other people. “They allow their account to be used for the transfer of ill-gotten gains. They may or may not be aware of the crime. However, they are complicit if they recklessly allow their account to be used to launder the proceeds of these crimes,” explains Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Triona Brooks. Students are often targeted by organised crime gangs to act as money mules, laundering thousands of euro through their accounts in exchange for a few hundred euro, she outlines. “Anti-money laundering legislation is designed to prevent organised crime gang members from opening up accounts so they need money mules to launder their money. Students are an easy target for these “money herders”. “They are often approached online, on campus, or while out socialising.” She advises: do not allow anyone to …

Ukrainian girl moved to Dublin hospital in critical condition

THE eight-year-old Ukrainian girl discovered at a house near Clarecastle on Tuesday morning with serious injuries has been transferred from University Hospital Limerick to a hospital in Dublin and remains in a critical condition. The girl’s serious injuries are understood to be the result of a suspected stabbing. A female adult, understood to be the child’s mother, was also found unconscious at the scene, and was removed to University Hospital Limerick where she is also in a critical condition. Gardai have issued an appeal for anyone who might have information about the incident to come forward and assist with their investigation. Shortly before 8am this Tuesday morning, September 27, Gardaí and emergency service attended a scene at a domestic residence in Clarecastle where the child and woman were discovered with serious injuriies. Child discovered with serious injuries in Clare village

Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a female child with serious injuries in a Clare village this morning. Gardaí and National Ambulance Service paramedics responded to the incident The girl was discovered at a premises in Clarecastle and has been taken from the scene to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for her injuries. Gardaí have sealed off the property while a technical examination of the scene is undertaken. Investigations are ongoing. More to follow.

Gardai appeal for witnesses to hit and run in Ennis

CLARE gardai are appealing for witnesses to a hit and run incident that occurred when a car mounted a footpath in Ennis. On Thursday, September 22, at 4.20pm the hit and run road traffic colission occurred at Claureen roundabout on the Lahinch Road. A car drove onto the footpath on the roundabout striking a pedestrian who was walking on the footpath. The lady fell over on impact and her right leg was then driven over by the back wheel of the vehicle. The driver left the scene immediately and drove out the Lahinch Road. The car is described as a light grey Sedan. Clare crime prevention officer Sergeant Triona Brooks said, “We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or to anyone who may have dash cam footage to contact Ennis Garda Station on 065 6848100.”

Group fears heritage sign was stolen to be sold to pub

IN an act described as “wanton vandalism” a sign which had been erected by a community group to highlight the history of Clarecastle Quay has been stolen. However the Clarecastle & Ballyea Heritage Group has vowed not to let this stop its plans for a ‘heritage trail’ of the area, with some signs already in place and more planned for the future. The stolen metal sign for ‘Dromoland Road’ was taken sometime overnight on Monday, September 12, after 9pm. Eric Shaw of the Clarecastle & Ballyea Heritage Group told The Champion the group was very disappointed to discover that the sign had been taken under cover of darkness. He fears that it may be offered for sale to an unsuspecting pub as a decorative feature, urging anybody who comes across it to contact their local gardaí. Warning as counterfeit notes tendered in Clare

BUSINESS owners and the general public are being warned to be on the look out following reports to gardaí of counterfeit banknotes being tendered in North Clare over the weekend. Sergeant Triona Brooks, Crime Prevention Officer advised, “There are many security features incorporated into banknotes that make them difficult to recreate. Many of these features can be checked manually using the three step security check Feel-Look-Tilt test.” She explained, “Most notes are embossed, usually the writing or the logo. The note should feel crisp, not limp, waxy or shiny. Security paper and special printing processes give banknotes a unique feel. “Print lines should be sharp and well defined with no blurred edges. The colours should be clear and distinct with no hazy fringes. “Check for the watermark image and security thread. The watermark should be hardly apparent until the note is held against a bright light source.” She added, “For all bank notes, do not rely on just one feature …

Clare man loses substantial sum of money in ‘eir’ scam

GARDAÍ in Clare have warned “people of all ages and all walks of life are falling victim to fraud on a daily basis”. This comes as a man was scammed out of a “substantial” sum of money in the county after falling victim to fraudsters claiming to be from Eir. Sergeant Triona Brooks, Crime Prevention Officer outlines that gardaí received a report during the week from a gentleman who had received a call from someone purporting to be from Eir saying that their internet had been hacked. The caller requested that the man go online and enter his details. “He did this and then realised that it was a scam and he is at a loss of a substantial sum of money,” said Sergeant Brooks. “We need everyone to spread the word, people of all ages and all walks of life are falling victim to fraud on a daily basis. Car stolen after burglar entered house through unsecured door

GARDAI have issued home security advice following an incident in west Clare which culminated in a homeowner’s car being stolen. Between 11pm on Sunday night, September 11 and 7.30am on Monday morning, entry was gained to a house in the Churchfield estate in Doonbeg. The front door of the house was unsecure and the key to the owner’s van was taken from inside. Her van, a silver Hyundai IX35 registration number 141 CE 118, was stolen from the driveway. Meanwhile in Shannon last Friday, September 9, between 1.30am and 7am, entry was gained to a house in the Ros Min estate in Tullyvarragh and a black Samsung phone and a wallet was stolen.
