CLARE Cancer Support Centre has launched a men’s health initiative to provide specialist physiotherapy treatment for cancer patients. It is believed the Clare Cancer Support Centre is one of the first charitable organisations to provide this specialist service to local male cancer patients. According to a recent medical study, men who complete five full weeks of specific exercises before pelvic surgery have less incontinence and better sexual function after surgery. In line with international men’s health week, Sláinte an Chláir and local physiotherapy practice, YOUtherapies are linking up to provide Clare men with support around rehabilitation from prostate cancer. During the week, Clare men are asked to make the connections, check in, check up and check it out to safeguard their health. Chartered physiotherapist, Aideen Farrell, told the Clare Champion the centre believes there is a gap in the rehabilitation that Clare men receive after prostate, pelvic and colorectal cancer surgery. CLARE County Council will light up Áras Contae an Chláir in teal next month to show its support for World Ovarian Cancer Day. At this month’s meeting of the local authority it was confirmed that the council’s headquarters would be lit up on May 8 to raise awareness of ovarian cancer which has been dubbed ‘the silent killer’. The date also marks the 11th anniversary of the founding of the Clare Cancer Support Centre (Sláinte an Chlár) in Kilnamona. A joint motion requesting that Áras Contae an Chláir be lit up in honour of World Ovarian Cancer day while also acknowledging the anniversary of the Clare Cancer Support Centre was proposed by Councillors Clare Colleran Molloy, Susan Crawford and John Crowe. The council headquarters will join other high profile buildings nationwide in the action including the Mansion House, the National Concert Hall, the Titanic Building, Cork City Hall, UCC, NUIG, Kilkenny Castle and the Rock of Cashel. SCARIFF resident Lynn Von Lintzgy’s life was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with cancer in August 2012 and again when it returned last year. Now her son has chosen to embark on a life-changing journey of his own in solidarity. Daniel Watson, who has been living in Australia for the past 13 years, was so moved by his mother’s battle with cancer that he decided to set off on a five-month expedition across Australia by walking from Perth to Sydney. Walking on average 50km a day, Daniel aims to cover the 4,690km journey by early March, having set off on October 20. Inspired by his mother’s positive attitude and by the support she is receiving locally at Clare Cancer Support Centre, he left his job in Sydney, hopped on a flight to Perth and began his challenge.
