Gardaí have arrested one person following the seizure of a quantity of drugs, cash and designer goods in Ennis. Gardaí in Ennis arrested a motorist last Saturday afternoon after he failed to stop when instructed. During a follow-up operation which included searches under warrant of a residential property in Ennis, suspected cocaine and cannabis to the value of approximately €15,500 were seized. A sum of cash and a quantity of designer goods were also confiscated. The drugs have been sent for forensic analysis and investigations into the matter are ongoing. The arrested individual who is a male in his 20s, was subsequently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda Station in County Clare. He has since been released without charge, and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

TWO men have been arrested by gardaí as investigations continue into a shooting incident and criminal damage in North Clare at the weekend. Gardaí have confirmed the arrests were made on Monday and the men detained at Ennis Garda Station under Section 30 Offences against the State Act. Gardaí at Ennistymon Garda Station are investigating a number of incidents including a discharge of a firearm and criminal damage that occurred in Ennistymon on Sunday. A man in his 50s was taken to hospital for treatment after a firearm was discharged in the Deepark area of the North Clare village. A 32-year-old man appeared in court tonight charged with the murder of Lisdoonvarna man, John O’Neill. At a special sitting of Ennis District Court at 9.25pm on Saturday night, Thomas Lorigan, of no fixed abode, appeared charged with the murder of Mr O’Neill (78) at St Brendan’s Road, Lisdoonvarna, at an unknown time on January 6/7. Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution at Ennis Garda Station at 8.03pm on Saturday evening, Dt Sgt John Farmer of Kilrush Garda Station told the court that when cautioned and charged, Mr Lorigan said ‘no comment’. Insp Helen Costello told the court that the Garda application was to remand Mr Lorigan in custody and that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had directed a trial on indictment. Gardaí have arrested and charged a man in relation to a robbery in County Clare on April 19. Shortly after 1am a man, armed what is believed to be a handgun and a crowbar entered a shop on Gort Road in Ennis. The man threatened staff and demanded cash from till. One customer in the shop at the time was also threatened. The staff member handed over the contents of the till and the man left then left the shop. No person was injured during the incident. Gardaí have arrested a woman and seized €72,000 in cash following the search of a house in Westbury in South East Clare. Shortly after 7pm last Sunday evening, Gardaí from the Limerick Divisional Drugs Unit, assisted by the Armed Response Unit, executed a search warrant at a house in the Westbury area. The search operation took place as part of an ongoing operation targeting the sale and supply of drugs. During the course of the search Gardaí seized approximately €72,000 in cash. A woman, aged in her 20s, was arrested at the scene and brought to Henry Street Garda Station. She was detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 and has since been released. A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

THE Lead singer of Irish rock group The Cranberries, Dolores O’Riordan, is currently being detained at Shannon Garda Station having been arrested at Shannon Airport this morning in connection with an alleged assault on board a flight. The singer was travelling on a flight from New York’s JFK airport and was arrested after it made its scheduled arrival at Shannon airport at 5.45am this morning (Monday). It is alleged that Ms O’Riordan assaulted a female air hostess during the flight and subsequently in the course of her arrest it is further alleged that she assaulted a male garda. An Aer Lingus air hostess received injuries to her leg during the flight and is presently being treated at University Hospital Limerick. The Limerick singer can be detained at Shannon Garda Station for a maximum of 12 hours.

GARDAI investigating a fatal traffic collision, which occurred at about 8.30pm on Wednesday night on the Gort Road in Loughrea have arrested a man in his 20s. The man has been detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Loughrea Garda Station and can be detained for up to 24 hours. A cyclist, 68 year old John White, St Laurences Field in Loughrea, was fatally injured in the collision. He was taken to University College Hospital Galway where he was later pronounced dead. A post mortem was carried out yesterday afternoon by State Pathologist, Prof Marie Cassidy.
