By Seamus Hayes Clare 0-18 Galway 1-15 The strength of the Clare senior hurling panel was highlighted at cusack Park in round 5 of the Allianz hurling league where the home side secured a share of the spoils despite playing 40 minutes with fourteen players on a day when they started with a side which showed seven changes from the team which produced such an outstanding performance in hammering Waterford a week earlier. Before an attendance of 9,299, substitute Colin Ryan hit the levelling point from a 60m free in the second minute of injury time to tie the scores for the seventh and final time. The game produced plenty of talking points but in the end a draw was a fair outcome. The biggest talking point was the decision of referee Cathal McAllister not to award Galway a penalty nine minutes into the second half when Galway forward Carthal Mannion was clearly held. By Seamus Hayes For this Sunday’s Allianz hurling league tie between leaders Clare and Galway at Cusack Park, the Clare management team has named a team that shows six changtes in personnel from the side which started against Waterford last week. Into the team come Patrick Kelly, Jack Browne, Paul Flanagan, Colm Galvin, Shane Golden and Tony Kelly and they will replace Donal Tuohy, David McInerney, Pat Donnellan, Colin Ryan, John Conlon and Conor McGrath. In the case of Ballyea’s Jack Browne, this will be his first taste of league action. Last year’s All-Ireland winning goalie Patrick Kelly will start his first league game this season. Regular wing back Pat O’Connor will partner Colm Galvin at midfield for this tie. Sports Editor Seamus Hayes CLARE have a number of injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s Oscar Traynor Cup semi-final, in which they take on the Kerry League at Tralee (kick-off at 2pm). Stephen Hickey and Dave McCarthy, two key members of the squad, are battling to be fit. Both did play a part in their respective clubs (Ennis Town and Avenue United) games at the weekend but a final decision on their fitness will not be made until later this week. Both scored for their clubs on Sunday and both Ennis sides continued their challenge for the Premier League title. Centre-back Rhys Phillips is almost certain to miss Sunday’s tie after he was injured when playing with Avenue United on Sunday week last. Shane Daniels from Ennis Town is understood to be in contention to replace Phillips for the trip to Tralee but young Paddy O’Malley is also in contention for a starting spot. By Seamus Hayes IT was a bad night for Clare football at Miltown on Wednesday evening, as the U-21 footballers suffered a heavy defeat to Tipperary in the Munster championship semi-final. All-Ireland minor champions three years ago, Tipperary went into the game with the favourites’ tag but not even their most ardent of supporters expected this tie to be so one-sided. Clare were, to put it simply, outclassed by a visiting side that scored all but a point of their tally from play, whereas Clare could only manage two scores from play. In front of an attendance of 624 at Hennessy Park, Clare went into the half-time break trailing by four points. The writing was on the wall as they had just played with the aid of a very strong wind but had failed to make any real impression on the favourites, who kicked some impressive scores. A 13 point win over Waterford at Cusack Park has sent the Bannermen through to the quarter finals and ensured that they will not be involved in the relegation play off to determine who will drop down to division 1 B for next season. Scoring 4-14 without reply in a blistering twenty five minute spell in the opening half against Waterford, the All-Ireland champions left Waterford reeling when the teams clashed before an attendance of 7, 352 at the Clare headquarters. Michael Talty is chairman of the Kilmurry Ibrickane Centenary Committee and has found that many committee members were re-energised at the prospect of helping to mark 100 years of the club, which hugs the spectacular, occasionally deadly, Atlantic coastline. “It’s a very big focal point because of it being our centenary year. An awful lot of people, who might not have been involved for a number of years, have got involved again and have been rejuvenated by the centenary year. Tipperary 3-9 Clare 0-14 ALTHOUGH they battled bravely and were still in the game half way through the second half, the concession of three goals handed the result to Tipperary. Clare played some decent attacking football and put over some outstanding points from play. The games crucial score was Tipperary’s third goal, 19 minutes into the second half. Barry Grogan netted his second penalty, the first had been well saved by Pierce Deloughrey. Full forward Conor McGrath hit three, the first after ten minutes putting his side five clear. Tipperary had the margin down to a three points when McGrath hit for a second and this was quickly followed by a John Conlon goal which left Clare 3-7 to 0-8 ahead at half time. Ten minutes before the break, Clare lost Darach Honan to injury and this led to the introduction of Podge Collins who went onto play a key part in the win. Tipperary put on the pressure after the break and they outscored Clare 0-6 to 0-1 in the first fifteen minutes of the new half. THE Camogie Association has launched a new programme for parents and their teenage daughters to learn the skills of camogie in their local club. You & Me Play Camogie is funded to the tune of €10,000 by the Coca-Cola Thank You Fund. The six week programme encourages parents and their daughters, from age12 to14, to learn the basic skills of camogie and avail of advice on nutrition and leading a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Applications are invited and eight clubs, nationwide, will be chosen as part of the project. “The Camogie Association is delighted to launch this exciting initiative for parents and their teenage daughters. Health and well-being and leading a fun and active lifestyle are central elements of the programme and so too encouraging daughters and parents to try the sport of camogie together. Clare 2-13 Wicklow 1-8 THE Clare footballers maintained their drive for promotion from division 4, with an eight point win over Wicklow in Cusack Park on Sunday. Clare are now top of the division with three games left to play. Both teams were unbeaten before the game, with Wicklow having won both of their games prior to this tie, while Clare had beaten Waterford and London, while they drew with Leitrim. The biggest talking point to emerge from this game came in just the sixth minute when Wicklow captain Leighton Glynn was red carded following an incident with Martin McMahon. Paralympics Ireland this week announced a panel of 45 athletes across eleven sports, comprised of those considered most likely to qualify for the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. Killaloe swimmer Jonathan McGrath is a member of the squad. The panel will come together for the first time as a group in March when they meet for the initial multisport training camp of the Rio cycle, in Limerick. Commenting on the announcement of the 2014 panel, Paralympics Ireland performance manager, Dave Malone said, “Being named on the panel is always a notable step on the journey to secure Paralympic Games qualification for an athlete.” The panel boasts several London 2012 medallists including athletes Jason Smyth and Michael McKillop, swimmer Darragh McDonald and handcyclist Mark Rohan. Ennis started off with a strong scrum, followed by Dylan Kenny breaking through tackles to score a converted score under the posts. Ennis’ defence stood firm and soon Joey Keane managed a huge steal with the Cobh Pirates just short of the try line. At the end of the first-half, the opposition scored a penalty, bringing the half-time score to 7 – 3. At the start of the second-half, the Cobh Pirates scored another penalty. Both sides had freetakers of a standard far higher than Junior C as Ciara Meehan and Sarah McEvoy shared a dozen scores over the hour. New Clare ladies football manager

IN a statement this afternoon Clare LGFA announced the appointment of Listowel’s Graham Shine as the new Intermediate team manager for the coming season. The former Limerick and Kerry Ladies manager has been appointed for two years, with an option of a third, in charge of the county’s flagship side. Board Chairman Sean Lenihan advised that there were a number of applicants for the post from both within and outside the County and thanked the unsuccessful candidates for their interest in the position. He outlined Shine’s extensive experience at Club and County level over many years and wished him and his backroom team well over the next couple of years starting soon with preparation for Clare’s return to Division 2 of the National Football League commencing in mid-January. Shannon Town shade cup spoils in low-key derby

(FAI Junior Cup) Shannon Town A 2 – Bunratty/Cratloe 1 Shannon Town inched the derby spoils to book their place in the next round of the FAI Junior Cup but it wasn’t the greatest of advertisements for an early morning kick-off in Lynch Park in Shannon on Sunday. Don’t get me wrong, all the ingredients were ripe for a memorable derby as a sizeable crowd was in attendance to witness a rare clash of these neighbours while there was the added layer of new Shannon Town manager Davy Hogan playing against his former Premier winning club. However, perhaps the players weren’t given sufficient notice of the 10:30am kick-off as the teams never really livened up until the final quarter. Amazingly, there wasn’t a shot of note throughout the entire opening period and essentially it was only with Charlie Morrison’s 68th minute penalty that this prudent tie finally opened up.
