A NEW facility to help children learn to cycle could be on track for Ennis, writes Jessica Quinn.
A proposal to create a ‘Learn to Cycle Track’ in the county capital is currently being explored by the local authority.
Putting forward the idea at the monthly meeting of the Ennis Municipal District Councillor Mary Howard stated that the track would help build children’s cycling confidence and encourage them to get on their bikes more.
She urged the council to follow the lead of Dungarvan which recently opened Ireland’s first learn-to-cycle track.
“We are all talking about walking buses and cycling buses to school, we are putting in cycling lanes and other infrastructure around the town. It is very important that we teach children how to use the road correctly.”
She explained that the track allows for children to learn to cycle in a way that mimics a real life road structure with road lines, signs and pedestrian crossings. The only thing that is missing is traffic.
“The children learn about rights of way and where to be on the road in a safe environment.”
She suggested that Active Ennis John O’Sullivan Park, Lee’s Road would be an ideal location.
“It has been a huge success in Dungarvan. Everything we can do to educate and empower children to be confident on the road is invaluable. This is within our reach.”
The motion was seconded by Councillor Ann Norton who described the track as “a fantastic initiative” adding “it is lovely to see young children on their bikes”.
She acknowledged the work of Clare Sports Partnership in promoting cycling.
Councillor Paul Murphy also voiced his support saying he had seen news reports of the track in Dungarvan and was very impressed with it.
He added that it is crucial if the project goes ahead that it be adjacent to a proposed greenway.
“The kids could develop their confidence on the track and then take off on the greenway. This can’t be in isolation.”
Councillor Pat Daly added that a track would be “great for the children of the town, cycling is hugely popular and it keeps you fit and healthy”.
Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy expressed the hope that the proposal would be feasible.
Responding to the motion, Tim Forde, Head of Sports & Recreation, stated, “This Notice of Motion has arrived at Sports & Recreation and to that end we will research the possibilities, specifications and costs of a proposed ‘Learn to Cycle’ Track.
“This information will be forwarded to EMD for consideration of a location. AE John O’Sullivan Park, Lees Road, does not have a free area, sufficient in size, if this project is to realise to its true potential. We remain open to further discussions.”
Director of Service Carmel Kirby stated that the proposal would support Active Travel measures in the town adding her support. Councillor Howard concluded by stating Lee’s Road would be an “ideal location” with the proposed the West Clare greenway planned to eventually connect with the amenity. She also pointed to an overgrown section at the site which she feels could house the track.
“I think we should really push for this to happen,” she said.
