Council halts discharge of Ballyvaughan ‘white gunge’

Clare Champion Print Subscription

The discharge of large volumes of water from the site of the Ballyvaughan Wastewater Treatment has been halted, after environmental concerns were raised by local residents. The €11 million treatment plant is currently being developed in partnership between Uisce Éireann and Clare County Council.
Local resident, Robert Shannon, contacted The Clare Champion last Friday to highlight the discharge of a large amount of “white gunge” from the site and into the nearby bay.
The waters off Ballyvaughan are a haven for bird, fish and animal life and are part of the Galway Bay Special Area of Conservation.
