St Caimin’s girls lift First Year Cup

THE girls’ soccer team from St Caimin’s in Shannon met Coláiste Mhuire, Askeaton in the final of the North Munster First Year Cup last Friday in Askeaton. The Shannon team had already overcome schools from Newport, Borrisokane and Laurel Hill, Limerick.St Caimin’s started well and were on the attack for the first 10 minutes with Zoe McInerney seeing many long-range shots go close and Orla Carroll just missing in front of goal.However, Askeaton had good players in attack and, following some hesitancy in the Shannon defence, they took the lead in the first half. To their credit, St Caimin’s were not ruffled and were soon rewarded with a goal from Zoe McInerney, following clever work from Saoirse Barry. The Shannon captain, Niamh McInerney scored the second soon after with a fine half volley after a corner kick.St Caimin’s took the initiative during the second half and continued to pressure their opponents. Hermitage FC celebrates 50 years

HERMITAGE FC’s 50th anniversary celebrations will conclude next weekend with a dress dance at the West County Hotel on Saturday and a social gathering on Sunday.Various events have been held throughout what has been a very successful year for the club and these include a highly successful golf classic in April at Ennis Golf Club.John Delaney, chief executive officer of the FAI, will be one of the guests at this Saturday’s gala function, during which he will present the members of the A team with their first division league medals.When celebrating their 21st anniversary in 1981, the club also held a dress dance in the West County Hotel with ex-Limerick and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Kevin Fitzpatrick as guest of honour.This year, the committee including chairman Gerry Scanlon, Eddie Walsh, Mark and Joe Moloney, Joe Shannon, Jamie Kenneally, Keith Molloy, Fred Dinan, Frank Coote, Mickey Quinn and Sinéad Moloney have gone for the same format.One of the highlights of the …

New Greyhound Stadium to open in October

After a few false starts, a number of disappointments and criticism from dog owners and trainers for the long delay, the new greyhound racing stadium for Limerick is well on the way.The new stadium, situated on a site at Greenpark off the Dock Road, will be opened to the public on October 8. The present stadium at the Markets Field will close on July 17 and in between that an the opening of the new stadium greyhound owners and trainers, who would normally race in Limerick, will be catered for by way of additional racing in Tralee and Galway stadiums.No doubt it will an occasion of going down memory lane when the Markets Fields closes its doors for the last race. Bord na gCon are making this a special occasion.Greyhound racing has been taking place at this venue since 1933 and over the years it has been the home for one of Ireland’s leading classics, the Irish St Leger.Historically the …

Munster medal haul for Ennis swimmers

THE Ennis Swimming and Lifesaving Club grade C swimmers enjoyed a successful outing in Nenagh recently in a Munster-graded gala.  This gala marked the end of  the swimming season and all the swimmers were determined to achieve personal best (pb) times.
