St Caimin’s girls lift First Year Cup

The First Year Cup-winning team from St Caimin’s in Shannon.
THE girls’ soccer team from St Caimin’s in Shannon met Coláiste Mhuire, Askeaton in the final of the North Munster First Year Cup last Friday in Askeaton. The Shannon team had already overcome schools from Newport, Borrisokane and Laurel Hill, Limerick.
St Caimin’s started well and were on the attack for the first 10 minutes with Zoe McInerney seeing many long-range shots go close and Orla Carroll just missing in front of goal.
However, Askeaton had good players in attack and, following some hesitancy in the Shannon defence, they took the lead in the first half. To their credit, St Caimin’s were not ruffled and were soon rewarded with a goal from Zoe McInerney, following clever work from Saoirse Barry. The Shannon captain, Niamh McInerney scored the second soon after with a fine half volley after a corner kick.
St Caimin’s took the initiative during the second half and continued to pressure their opponents. The defence was well marshalled by Megan Johnston and Amy Kirby and Aoife Roche was strong in midfield. Sarah Sheedy was a dynamo down the left wing and two surging runs resulted in two goals for Zoe McInerney.
Following the match, the team captain, Niamh McInerney was presented with the First Year Cup.
