ZIMMER BIOMET has been given planning permission for a new development which will see another 50 jobs created in Shannon. A planning statement accompanying the application said, “Due to the continued success and expansion of the Zimmer Biomet brand, the business leadership team have chosen to further invest and expand the infrastructure at their Ballycasey Beg facilities. MORE than 350 children in 12 primary schools across Clare, Galway, Limerick and Tipperary have learned more about biodiversity and how to reduce waste, reuse and recycle, thanks to an environmental initiative run by global healthcare technology company, Zimmer Biomet as part of the Junior Achievement outreach program. Under the initiative, dubbed Keen to Keep it Green, the Shannon based employer donated trees and wildflowers and its employees visited schools to plant the trees, wildflowers and run litter clean-ups. The programme was conducted in full compliance with COVID-19 regulations and public health guidelines. WHILE Intel will not comment on how their redundancy programme will affect its Shannon operation, it is expected that job losses are likely to be proportionate to the numbers going throughout the company. Intel is laying off 11% of workers around the world and there are around 250 employees in Shannon. An Intel spokesperson said on Wednesday that voluntary redundancy will be available to people within certain criteria, while information on job losses at their individual sites is not currently available. Shannon is a core European research and development site for Intel’s communications and intelligent systems businesses. The company first came to Shannon in 2000, when there were around 40 employees. The work at Shannon is highly skilled, with 95% of workers there educated to third level or higher. Exports from the Shannon Region are contributing in a major way to the national economy. This is highlighted in the 2014 edition of Top 250 Exporters in Ireland and Northern Ireland, published this week by the Irish Exporters Association (IEA), in association with Investec, a leading specialist bank and wealth and investment manager. The report highlights that eight companies in Shannon exported goods to the value of €1.5 billion across the ICT and life sciences sector in 2013. Google Ireland Ltd (Google) was named the largest exporting company, moving up one place from its previous year’s ranking. Google was followed by Microsoft Ireland Ltd (2nd, export turnover of €15bn), Johnson & Johnson (3rd, export turnover of €10.5bn), Dell Products (4th, export turnover of €8.6bn) and Smurfit Kappa Group (5th, export turnover of €7.3bn). By Owen Ryan THE number employed at Zimmer Orthopedic Manufacturing Limited has reached a new high following the addition of dozens of new staff in recent weeks. General Manager Adrian Furey said that the company has had an excellent experience since coming to Shannon six years ago, leading to its expansion. “Quarter one is nearly over and during it we have added around 30 jobs which has taken us over the 300 mark this week,” said Mr Furey.
