HEADING into Round 5 of the domestic hurling leagues this bank holiday weekend, there are five unbeaten teams in the Clare Champion Cup (Divisions 1A and 1B). Crusheen, Sixmilebridge, Kilmaley, Whitegate and Wolfe Tones have won all their matches to date, with the Shannon club having a game in hand as they and St Joseph’s did not play last week, having agreed to double up with their championship first round at the end of the month. Kilmaley and Whitegate have made a similar arrangement with regard to their league tie, which was scheduled for this weekend. When they meet in the championship first round in a few weeks time, the league points will also be up for grabs. In Division 2, there are three unbeaten teams. Ruan and Parteen have full points from their four outings, while Smith O’Brien’s are just one point behind with three wins and a draw to their credit. Killanena top Division 3 with three wins …

THE Ryan family in Newmarket endured a very difficult emotional rollercoaster in the spring of 2009. The birth of Abbey Ryan, the first granddaughter in their extended family, on March 3, 2009 brought great joy to everyone. However, the death of her father, Pakie, (34) in early April, left a cloud hanging over the entire family. The sports fanatic and Newmarket character would have been 40 on Monday, January 26. During his illness, Pakie received great support from his wife, Frances, relatives, friends and the local community. His father, Christy recalls Pakie repeatedly said there were people much worse off than him, even in the middle of his cancer battle. Two or three years after his death, it struck Christy that Pakie had 34 years of happiness, he was never sick and never in hospital. Frances describes the spring of ’09 as a “battle of emotions”, which was a bit too much for everyone to take in, as there was …

2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of the World War I and Clare’s first All-Ireland senior hurling triumph. These two diverse events have their own historical importance but an interaction between them is highlighted by the story of Newmarket hurler, John Fox. Fox featured at right half-back on the Clare team that defeated Laois by 5-1 to 1-0 in the 1914 All-Ireland final. A year later, he joined the British Army. He is the only Clare man to have won an All-Ireland senior hurling medal and to have fought in World War I. Fox later sold his cherished Celtic Cross. His All-Ireland medal was purchased by the late Kevin Keogh from Newmarket. When John Fox died in 1967, Mr Keogh generously returned the medal to the possession of the Fox family from Knocksaggart. Former Wexford hurling manager, Liam Griffin returns to Clare this weekend to see the All-Ireland championship qualifier at Cusack Park but he will also spend some time in Newmarket-on-Fergus, recalling old times. The Rosslare man has many happy memories of his time with the Newmarket club in the early 1960s, with whom he won two U-21 titles and a couple of Clare senior championships. In fact, he is proud to say that, in his time with the Blues he “never played on a losing team”. “We were unbeaten in all our games. We had a really good team that included the likes of Trixie Twomey, Mick Considine, the O’Learys, Gus Lohan, Liam Danagher and Pudden Cullinan,” he recalled ahead of Saturday’s meeting of Clare and Wexford. “Wexford are going into the lions’ den. They have a young team for the most part, with a few experienced players. Wexford are up against it having to travel to Clare and this game …

A cyclist was airlifted to hospital on Thursday evening with extensive injuries following an accident a few miles from her home. The woman, in her early 40s and from Sixmilebridge, had been cycling with friends along a country road at Granaghan More, near Fenloe Lake, when the accident occurred. It’s understood that she was in collision with a passing lorry and sustained extensive injuries to one of her hands. Two units of the fire brigade from Shannon along with an ambulance and rapid response advanced paramedic unit from Ennis responded to the incident. The Emergency Aeromedical Service was alerted and the HSE’s air ambulance, operated by the Air Corps, was requested to attend the scene. Fire crews selected a clear landing site for the helicopter before she was airlifted to University Hospital Galway for emergency surgery. The other cyclists were uninjured but were said to have been left badly shaken by the incident. Gardaí from Newmarket on Fergus are investigating.

Newmarket Celtic 1 Moher Celtic 0 [doptg id=”24″] A superb left foot volley from Killian Howard decided the under 19 cup final at the county grounds in Doora on Monday and completed a great weekend for Newmarket Celtic. Less than forty eight hours earlier Celtic captured the junior cup title for the third year in a row, the first time that the club achieved that feat. Monday’s final was a repeat of the Michael O’Gorman youths cup final of two weeks ago when Moher emerged victorious and many of the same players were in action in this decider. The all important goal came in the twentieth minute when Howards powerful left foot volley found the top corner of Keith Sexton’s net. It was a goal worthy of any final. Keith McInerney, is in his first season as manager of Newmarket Celtic A and when he leads his team to the county grounds on Sunday, it will be his first time being involved on cup final day. Having served as manager with Connolly Celtic for the past few years he moved to Newmarket Celtic this season. “I was involved under manager Liam Murphy with the Oscar Traynor team last year and this led to me getting the Newmarket manager’s role this season”, explained McInerney who part of the Rock Rovers set up some years ago when they got to the cup semi-final “Expectations are always high in Newmarket. They are one of the big powers of the game in Clare and having silverware on the mantlepiece at the end of each season is always a priority. Newmarket justified favouritism when scoring a 4-2 win over surprise packets West Clare at the County grounds on Sunday morning. They dominated the opening half and led 4-0 at the break thanks to goals from Stephen Kelly, Eoin O’Brien, Eoin Hayes and Paudie Hayes. Two minutes into the second half they should have extended their lead when they were awarded a penalty but team captain Michael Crosby saw his effort rebound off the crossbar. West Clare were given a lifeline midway through the half when Jason Russell converted a penalty after he was fouled and twelve minutes from time he found the net again, this time from a free.
