THE lack of motorway service stations is forcing people to turn the side of Clare’s stretch of the M18 into a public toilet, a local authority member has asserted. Offering to produce video evidence of the practice of public urination along the M18 and N18, Councillor PJ Ryan appealed to the Council to ask Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the Transport Minister to install public services on the Clare stretch of the motorway. “It has been brought to may notice that quite a lot of vehicles cars on N18/M18 are using side of motorway when they need to go to the toilet,” he said. “Making a public toilet out the motorway is a disgrace It is mostly on the south-bound side that there is the problem. Read More »Inter-agency training exercise to cause some disruption on N18
A TRAINING exercise is set to take place on the N18 over a number of hours on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning this week which will cause some disruption to traffic. To ensure ongoing resilience of this strategically important corridor, an exercise is planned with the emergency services, An Garda Síochána and Fire Services in collaboration with Clare County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s road maintenance contractor, Colas Joint Venture. This training exercise will temporarily implement emergency cross-overs and contra flow traffic arrangements required to manage serious incidents on the N18 between Junction 5 Cratloe and Junction 6 Bunratty. The operation will commence on Wednesday June 29 at 8pm until 6am on Thursday June 30. Drivers will experience temporary traffic layouts during this time under the management of the emergency services. GARDAÍ have issued an appeal for witnesses to a fatal collision on the N18 at Cratloekeel to come forward. The single vehicle road traffic collision occurred at approximately 11.55am today (Saturday, October 30). The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle involved, a man in his 40s, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Limerick University Hospital where he later passed away. A post-mortem examination will be conducted at a later date. The N18 at Cratloekeel between Junction 5 Cratloe and Junction 4 Limerick is currently closed as Forensic Collision Investigators conduct an examination of the scene. Local diversions are in place. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward, in particular, any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N18 at Cratloekeel between 11.45am and 12pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí. THE N18 dual-carriageway is closed southbound before the turn-off for the Radisson Hotel following a serious road traffic collision, reports Pat Flynn. The crash occurred at around 12.30pm between junction 5 Cratloe and junction 4 Cratloemoyle. Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Shannon and Limerick City attended the incident along with National Ambulance Service resources and Gardaí. The southbound lanes of the dual-carriageway have been closed and traffic is being diverted off the route at junction 5. Any motorists caught up in the traffic tailback are being turned back up onto the slip-road at junction 5 and away from the scene. No further details on the incident are available however it’s expected the road will remained closed for several hours.

SEVERAL people have been hospitalised after an incident involving three cars and a wandering animal on the N18 in Co Clare late last night. The collision occurred shortly before mid-night at Cratloekeel in the southbound lanes of the N18 just beyond junction 5 at Cratloe. It’s understood that two cars collided with a cow and that a third vehicle then struck one of the cars. Units of the fire brigade from Shannon Town and Limerick City responded to the incident along with several ambulances and Gardaí. The road was closed from the junction 5 flyover and traffic diverted away from the area while emergency service dealt with the incident. Fire crews had to use cutting equipment to help free three casualties from one vehicle. It’s believed four people in all were taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment following the collision. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. CONTRACTS for the construction of the Gort to Tuam motorway are being finalised this week. There were indications that the contracts could be signed this Thursday but this has not been confirmed by the National Roads Authority, who will be signing the contracts with the Public Private Partnership Company. NRA spokesperson, Sean O’Neill said he “expects the signing of the contracts to take place in the coming weeks”. The project is valued at €550 million and will extend the M18 motorway from Shannon to Tuam. Local Fianna Fáil councillor, Gerry Finnerty said he wants to see the contracts signed as quickly as possible and is hopeful local people will be employed on the project. “People want to know what is going on with this and people want to get working. WORK is expected to begin on the new Gort to Tuam €550 million motorway early in the new year. Clare county manager, Tom Coughlan told councillors at a local authority meeting on Monday that a contractor for the project has been selected, with construction to begin early in the new year. The motorway will be funded by an annuity from the State to the private contractors over a period of 25 years. According to the National Roads Authority (NRA), hundreds of jobs will be created during the construction process, with the opening of the road to have a major impact on traffic flow in blackspots such as Claregalway. The Department of Public Expenditure has approved the allocation of money to cover the Exchequer element of the scheme. The NRA says it will now re-engage with the preferred private contractor to complete the new N17/ N18 route. The construction of a 57km motorway, part of the Atlantic Corridor on the west …

SURFACE rehabilitation Works are taking place on the N18 Limerick to Ennis Road starting this weekend. Works are due to start on Sunday and are expected to last for approximately 10 to 12 weeks. A 50kmph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the works. The works will result in lane closures, in both directions, between the Junctions of R471 Sixmilebridge and Bunratty East. The Motorway Traffic Control Centre is advising motorists travelling to or from Bunratty to be aware that access to and from the N18 Northbound will be closed from Sunday, September 29, and diversions will be in place.
