Multitalented Clare vocalist, musician and composer, Lou McMahon, has just released Mysteria, the first single from her upcoming concept album, Butterfly Wars. The song merges the structures of video game music with a pop sensibility, underscored by a classical orchestral tapestry. Mysteria is the theme song from Lou’s concept album Butterfly Wars, and possesses the characteristics of both a video game underscore and a theme song. The music carries a hypnotic, minimalism reminiscent of Radiohead’s style or Massive Attack, yet with an orchestral instrumentation. Mysteria represents a digital realm within the game that blushes with botanical beauty, a rogue femininity and wilderness. The song aims to paint a gothic tapestry, reflecting the sullen disposition of the AI protagonist, X. Mysteria is accompanied by a music video featuring an anime representation of X, created by Paul Andre Fortin. “The genesis of X stems from my fascination with Japanese culture, especially my experiences in Tokyo and Yokohama, alongside my deep appreciation for …

The gothic-themed production chimes perfectly with the festival of Samhain and the release, on the eve of Hallowe’en, comes ahead of the single which will go live on November 10. “It tells a dark folk tale about a young girl named Heather who toys with necromancy to her own demise,” said Lou, whose soaring vocals are reminiscent of a young Stevie Nicks or Kate Bush. “The music video is being released for Hallowe’en, it is horror-themed to reflect the gothic rock undertones of the song. ‘Wide Eyed Lady’ is a dark folk tale, that interweaves gothic rock with folk pop, guided by a storytelling style that creeps in the realms of mythology, folklore and dark fantasy.” The atmospheric and haunting video was filmed and edited by Paul-André Fortin and forms the perfect backdrop to Lou’s darkly captivating lyrics. The piece features …

Before that, during the day, I’m at singers’ session,” she said last week. Regarding her music, she said, “I’m a singer/songwriter and I’d consider myself to be in the contemporary folk genre. I’ve been playing for a number of years and I’m just off tour with Jack L. I was support act. “Musically, my influences are mostly American folk songwriters; people like Joni Mitchell and I always liked PJ Harvey. Also, country singers like Alison Krauss, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, all the old songwriters. Then the newer ones like Bill Callahan on Anna Calvi or Maggie Bjorklund, that kind of thing.” The tour with Jack L saw her visiting many parts of the country. “I was doing that for most of 2012 and ’13. I was gigging with him in arts …
