QUESTIONS are being raised about why a multi-million housing development planned for Meelick has been shelved at a time when private rented accommodation is securing monthly rents of up to €1,300. Deputy Cathal Crowe has written to Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy asking for an explanation why this major development of 70 new housing units was not sanctioned by his department. “It is hugely regrettable that this project is not being developed at a time when there is an immense need for housing in the area. I liked this development because it almost had a 50 50 split of affordable and social housing. “There is a huge demand for housing in South-East Clare. Rents are averaging between €1,300 and €1,500 a month, which is some of the highest in the county. “There is huge rental pressure because of proximity to Limerick City and this housing development needed to happen,” he outlined. “There are other land parcels for sale in Meelick and …

Clare County Councillors, who supported the €120 million distributor road in South-East Clare, have been urged to visit areas along the route line that have been left “devastated” by flooding. Opponents of the road were left shocked and bewildered last July when a dramatic turnaround saw the preferred route approved by 17 votes to nine two weeks after it was unanimously rejected in the council chamber at the first meeting. THE proposal to adopt a variation to the County Development Plan to allow a controversial €120 million distributor road in South East Clare was passed by a majority of 17 to nine this Friday afternoon in a stormy and contentious meeting. Concerned residents from Parteen and Clonlara packed the public gallery where they were joined by Deputy Willie O’Dea and Limerick City Councillor Michael Sheehan to hear the decision on the proposed Limerick Northern Distributor Route. Cathaoirleach James Breen told the packed viewing space that because of the importance of the issue, he had relaxed the numbers limit to allow them all to attend. But he also warned the crowd if there was any comments, cheering, applause of heckling, the gallery would be cleared. Councillor Cathal Crowe said he opposed the proposal before the meeting and said it was an absolute betrayal of the village of Parteen and asked if he could read out the proposal. Councillor Breen refused this and …
