Mentors and players from Clare and Cork are arguing that the upcoming championship clash will not influence how the teams approach Sunday’s league game but it certainly adds some spice to the mix. Clare go into round three of the Division 1 A League on maximum points, thanks to impressive victories over Tipperary and Kilkenny, whereas Cork, after a good opening round win over Kilkenny, suffered defeat last time out in Wexford. Another defeat this week would put the Leesiders hovering close to the relegation zone so they are expected to come to Ennis in determined form. Clare, for their part, will want to keep their winning run going and they know victory this week will ensure their top division status for another year. They have beaten Cork in the Munster league already this year but they lost in last season’s league and also in the Munster final back in the summer of 2017. The team for Sunday will not …

Clare 1-21 Tipperary 0-19 An outstanding performance from David Reidy inspired Clare to a merited win over Tipperary in the opening round of the Allianz national hurling league division 1 at Cusack Park this afternoon. Although trailing by three points, 0-10 to 0-13, at half time, Tipperary looked to be in a strong position as they would have the aid of the breeze in the second half. When they drew level at 0-17 each with thirteen minutes remaining, a win looked to be on the cards for the visitors but the home side finished strongly and capped an impressive performance with a goal from Reidy in the final play of the game. It was point for point for much of the first half during which they were level on seven occasions. Clare 4-17 Cork 0-18 A comfortable eleven point win over title holders Cork has earned Clare a place in the final of the Co-op Superstores Munster senior hurling league where they will play their neighbours and great rivals Limerick Three goals in the opening quarter sent Clare on their way to this merited win, their second in a week (they easily accounted for Kerry last week) and with Limerick also scoring their second win of the campaign both have sealed their places in the final. The teams were due to meet in the third round next week with the final scheduled for a week later but I understand that both are keen to go ahead with the final this coming weekend and its expected that this will be confirmed by the Munster council in the next day or two. Two members of the 2017 minor team have been named in the senior side which will line out against Kerry in the opening round of the Munster senior hurling league at Sixmilebridge on Saturday (2p.m). In a team which features a mixture of youth and experience, Diarmuid Ryan (Cratloe) has been named at wing back while Gary Cooney from O’Callaghabns Mills will line out at corner forward in a side which sees Conor Cleary handed the full back role. Donal Tuohy will fill the goalkeeping position with David McInerney at centre back, David Reidy at midfield, John Conlon at wing forward and Shane O’Donnell at full forward. Waterford 2-21 Clare 1-22 A disappointing two point loss to Waterford in round 5 of the Allianz hurling league at Cusack Park this afternoon means that Clare must play Dublin in a relegation play off next weekend. Understandably, the result left Clare players and management very disappointed as this was a contest they had enough chances to win. While they can point to the fact that they played some great hurling in what was a very entertaining contest, their failure to emerge with victory left the home side’s followers in the attendance of 6,640, leave a sunny Cusack park in a very disappointed mood. The visitors started as if they were going to record a big win, racing into a 1-3 to 0-0 lead after just six minutes when they had the aid of a fresh wind. Ballyea’s Tony Kelly is named at midfield on the Clare side to face Waterford in a crucial national hurling league game at Cusack Park tomorrow, Sunday throw in at 3p.m.) from where he will captain the team. His return is one of four changes in personnell from the side which beat Dublin two weeks ago. Kelly’s Ballyea team mates Jack Browne, Paul Flanagan and Gearoid O’Connell are named amongst the substitutes but, surprisingly, Niall Deasy is not included in the match day squad. Colm Galvin is also named amongst the substitutes. In addition to Kelly, Whitegate’s Andrew Fahy, Inagh-Kilnamona’s Jason McCarthy and Cratloe’s Cathal McInerney are all named in the starting line up. Tulla’s David McInerney has been named in the Clare team for the first time since last summer’s championship for tomorrow’s league clash with Dublin at Cusack Park. The 2013 All-Ireland medal winner comes in at corner back for the injured Oisin O’Brien in what is one of three changes in personnell from the side which went down to Tipperary last week. The other changes are in attack where Ian Galvin, following an impressive showing when introduced at Semple stadium and Peter Duggan are named in the corner forward positions in place of Aaron Cunningham and Cathal McInerney, both of whom are included in the substitutes. The game throws in at 2p.m. And will be broadcast live on TG4. Tipperary 0-28 Clare 0-21 Tipperary’s greater all round physical strength proved decisive inthis division 1A hurling league tie at Semple stadium in Thurles today. They took control in the second half and while Clare made them battle all the way to the finish, the premier outfit were deserving of victory, their third in as many outings in this campaign. Despite playing against the breeze, Tipperary made the better start and raced into a five point lead after just seven minutes. A further two minutes elapsed before Clare had their first score, a point from Podge Collins. From here on Clare showed steady improvement and when the half time whistle sounded they were ahead by the minimum margin,0-11 to 0-10. The winners again made the better start to the second half and hit the first three points to open a two point lead.
