Superb defence inspires important win

Clare 1-14 Limerick 0-11 Inspired by a superb defence, Clare scored a merited win over Limerick in this round 3 tie Allianz football league tie at NewcastleWest this afternoon. A particularly strong first half display saw the visitors open a six point lead by half time when the score was 0-9 to 0-3 and when the scored the first three points of the second half to go nine clear, Limerick had a mountain to climb. The margin was still nine with a quarter of an hour remaining but Limerick piled on the pressure and landed four unanswered points to cut Clare’s lead to five with as many minutes remaining. The visitors killed off the home side’s mini revival two minutes from time when captain Gary Brennan flicked a Shane McGrath delivery to the net. Hard earned win for Clare

Clare 0-18 Wexford 1-11 Clare justified favouritism in this round 2 Allianz division 1B hurling league tie at Innovative Wexford Park this afternoon but there were a number of anxous moments before the Banner side emerged with a merited win. Greater experience and a higher level of fitness proved key ingredients for Clare who finished strongly, outscoring their opponents, 0-9 to 0-1 in the final twenty minutes. It was anybody’s game with the scores level with just four minutes remaining but Clare hit four points in three minutes to seal victory and keep their unbeaten run this season going. An injury hit Clare faced a strong wind in the opening half having been forced to make three changes in personnell from the side which beat Offaly in the opening round a week earlier. Injury concerns for Clare hurlers

The Clare senior hurling team to face Wexford in round 2 of the Allianz National hurling league division 1B will not be finalised until Sunday morning due to a number of ongoing injury concerns. Fourteen of the starting fifteen have been named with a vacancy left at left half forward. It is understood that John Conlon, forced out of the action early in the second half of last Sunday’s first round win over Offaly due to injury,will be given a chance to prove his fitness. Omitted from last week’s starting line up are Colm Galvin and Darach Honan due to injury and Peter Duggan who is suspended. Conor Ryan switches from wing back to replace Galvin at midfield with Jack Browne chosen at wing back.Gearoid O’Donnell is named in place of Peter Duggan at wing forward while Aron Shanagher is named in the full forward line in place of Honan. Joy for Clare but Wolfe Tones bow out

Munster league champions but no All-Ireland club hurling final date for Clare in 2016. Thats the story at the end of a busy January Saturday for Clare hurling as the county side overcame neighbours Limerick in the Provincial senior league final but county intermediate champions Wolfe Tones bowed out of the race for the All-Ireland title when going under to Bennettsbridge from Kilkenny at St. Rynaghs grounds in Banagher,Co. Offaly. An official attendance of 4,583 turned up at the Gaelic grounds for the meeting of arch rivals and Shannonside neighbours Clare and Limerick in the Munster hurling league final at the end of which Clare were ahead by the minimum margin, 0-18 to 0-17. Indeed the big attendance surprised officials and the start time was delayed by ten minutes to give patrons an opportunity to get into the stadium. Clare into Munster hurling league final

Clare 1-20 Waterford 1-9 Clare booked a place in the Munster senior hurling league final when they recorded a merited eleven point win over Waterford at the very impressive Waterford I.T. Sports complex at Carrickanore in Waterford city. [doptg id=”93″] Clare play their final game in the league section next Saturday evening when they travel to the Gaelic grounds to play their Shannonside neighbours Limerick who had a good win over Cork this week. Cork, Limerick and Waterford remain in contention for the second final spot and the outcome of the postponed tie between Limerick and Waterford which goes ahead on Tuesday evening at the Gaelic Grounds, will go a long way to determining who will go through to the final. In Sunday’s game, played in driving rain and cold conditions, the visitors were nine points clear at half time after playing with the aid of the wind. Clare make six changes for Kerry visit

Clare hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald has named his starting 15 to face Kerry in round 3 of the Munster senior hurling league at O’Garney Park, Sixmilebridge, this Wednesday evening (7.30pm) It shows six changes in personnel from the team which started against Cork in round one Into the starting team comes Andrew Fahy, Pat Donnellan, Cian Dillon (team captain), Colin Ryan, Conor O’Donnell and Gearoid O’Connell and they replace Donal Tuohy, Jack Browne, Colm Galvin, Shane Golden, David Fitzgerald and Tony Kelly. John Conlon is named at centre forward this week, while  Cian Dillon will be at centre back, flanked by Donnellan and Jack Browne. There is a new midfield pairing of Gearoid O’Connell and David Reidy. In their two games to date, Kerry have gone under to Limerick and Cork. They scored 0-18 in each tie. Kelly to lead Clare against Cork

Ballyea’s Tony Kelly will captain the Clare senior hurlers in their first competitve outing of 2016 when they face Cork in the opening game in the Munster senior league on Sunday. The game will take place at Sixmilebridge where the throw in will be at 2p.m. Inagh-Kilnamona’s David Fitzgerald will make his competitive senior debut having been named at corner forward completing a line which includes Clonlara duo John Conlon and Darach Honan. Another newcomer is Newmarket’s Eoin O’Brien who has been named at corner back. Tubber’s Pat O’Connor has been named at full back. The backline includes three Ballyea players with Paul Flanagan at corner back while Jack Browne and Gearoid O’Connell will fill the wing back positions, flanking Cratloe’s Conor Ryan. Clare Champion cup semi-final places filled

On a weekend when league action dominated the domestic GAA scene the pairings for the semi-finals of the Clare Champion cup (senior hurling league) were confirmed. Eire Og knew going into their clash with neighbours St. Josephs that they needed to win by seventeen points or more to claim a place in the last four. They came very close but their fifteen point winning margin wasn’t enough to see them through and that spot goes to Whitegate who finished second to Kilmaley. The three were level on 14 points each after nine games and it was left to score difference to separate them. Kilmaley had a vastly superior difference and claimed top spot. Crusheen sealed the runners up spot in division 1 A when they drew with Inagh-Kilnamona. Sixmilebridge were already through but they completed their programme games with their ninth win from nine outings when they overcame O’Callaghans Mills.
