Clare fall flat away to Galway

Galway 3-13 Clare 1-11 THE Clare footballers were emphatically beaten by Galway in Salthill on Sunday afternoon, in what was their first defeat of the 2017 NFL division 2 league season. In a game dominated by an exceptionally strong wind and torrential second half rain, Clare conceded three goals, having let in none in their opening games against Derry and Down. Goals from Eamon Brannigan and Shane Walsh helped Galway to build a 2-8 to 0-5 interval advantage. Too often Galway players broke from deep with no Clare player tracking. Clare needed to start the second half with a couple of scores but instead Johnny Heaney and Barry McHugh pointed for Galway, who now led by 11 points. A Keelan Sexton goal, set up by Cian O’Dea, gave Clare brief hope but nine second half wides, cost them. Clare did miss some decent goal scoring opportunities, while goalkeeper Joe Hayes made a couple of excellent saves. “We had goal chances …

Magnificent Clare trounce Kilkenny

Clare 2-19 Kilkenny 0-12 What a difference a week makes. Those of us, and there were quite a few, who feared the worst on Sunday after witnessing the disappointing seven point loss to Cork in the opening round a week earlier were treated to a thrilling performance which resulted in a thirteen point win over Kilkenny at Cusack park this afternoon. Its a result that few could have forseen but it was fully merited. Unlike the opening round eight days earlier, Clare’s hunger for victory was a key ingredient in this win. They dictated matters from the throw in and they had hit Kilkenny for 1-3 without reply after just four minutes. The gap was seven points inClare’s favour at the end of the first quarter and its fair to say that Kilkenny never looked like they might get back into contention. The half backs who had been in great difficulty against Cork, excelled this afternoon. Indeed, the entire defence …

They had an excellent chance to hit the front in the opening minute of the second half when a foul o nn Podge Collins resulted in a penalty. Tony Kelly’s effort was saved by Anthony Nash who saved the follow up effort from Aron Shanagher. Clare created a couple of goal chances in the second half but failed to capitalise on any of them Tony Kelly landed six second half points from play but Cork dominated the key positions in a tie which saw Clare without services of Colm Galvin who, it is understood, is omitted from the panel …

Clare v Cork game still stands

Clare’s request that this Wednesday’s Munster senior league fixture with Cork be deferred has been turned down and the fixture will go ahead in Sixmilebridge at 7.30p.m. Cork have already qualified for next Sunday’s final where their opponents will be either Clare, who are the competition holders or Limerick. Victory for Clare over Cork this Wednesday evening will see the Banner side into the final. Joint clare managers Donal Moloney and Gerry O’Connor stated after last Sunday’s win over Waterford that they had made it clear from the outset that they did not want to play this Wednesday. “We have thirteen players involved in Fitzgibbon cup (third level colleges) games this week and we cannot ask these players to play three senior games in one week, then play Fitzgibbon and then ask them to play a fourth senior game against Cork. We cannot ask some players to play five games in ten days and we are not going to torture …

Clare still in race for final spot

Clare 2-19 Waterford 3-13 Clare’s hopes of contesting the final of the Munster hurling league remain alive thanks to this three point win over Waterford at Fraher field in Dungarvan this Sunday afternoon. They must now beat unbeaten Cork in their final group game which is set for Wednesday night in Sixmilebridge. However, Clare have informed the authorities that they are not prepared to play on Wednesday. “We have seventeen players involved in the Fitzgibbon cup and they have first round games on Tuesday. It’s not fair to ask them to play again on Wednesday”, joint manager Donal Moloney said after the victory in Dungarvan. While they will be pleased to have returned to winning ways following their midweek loss to Limerick, There wil be s ome concern in the Clare camp at the fact that the defence again leaked some soft scores and also with the fact that they went twenty four second half minutes without scoring. Clare played …

Winning start for Clare hurlers

Clare 2-24 Kerry 1-15 Clare have made a winning start under new management duo Donal Moloney and Gerry O’Connor, beating Kerry in the Munster hurling league at Austin Stack park in Tralee. Kerry were well in contention for over three quarters of this tie but the visitors pulled away in the closing minutes and eight unanswered points sealed a merited victory over a Kerry side that showed some great skill in the opening half. Clare’s sharpness helped them to a four point lead at half time when the score was 1-12 to 0-11. Kerry led briefly after eight minutes when the score was 0-3 to 0-2 but Clare hit the next five points while conceding one to open a four point lead. They were five up after twenty minutes but the home side fought back and hit four in a row to level the tie at 0-10 each on the half hour mark, the levelling score coming from Clarecastle man Patrick …
