Plans have been unveiled for the provision of a video-based remote doctor service in Kilrush, as efforts intensify to halt cutbacks in the out-of-hours Shannondoc service in West and East Clare. It remains to be seen if this will satisfy campaigners seeking a full restoration of GP out-of-hours services throughout the county. Under a new rationalisation plan, which was supported by doctors at a recent annual general meeting, Shannondoc’s Kilrush and Ennistymon services will relocate to Miltown Malbay during weekdays, with the same operating hours applying. Kilrush and Ennistymon will only now open at weekends until 7pm. Shannondoc is to introduce a video-based remote doctor service at its Kilrush centre, allowing it to remain open nightly for two hours. The new service provides for a remote doctor to connect with the Kilrush clinic via a secure, high-definition video link. The planned reduction in GP out-of-hours services in Clare has been condemned as “deeply flawed” by Deputy Timmy Dooley. Shannondoc’s Kilrush and Ennistymon service will close from Monday to Friday, relocating to Miltown Malbay, while the out-of-hours clinic will only open at weekends in Kilrush and Ennistymon. The Killaloe clinic will open during weekends only, on an as-needs basis, with a mobile doctor serving the centre. At weekends, the operating hours will change from 9am to 9pm to 2pm to 6pm, with patients to be seen in Limerick, Ennis and Nenagh centres outside of those hours. The changes to the Killaloe service will start next Monday while the timeframe for changes in West Clare is expected in the near future. Details of the last conversation former Munster legend, Anthony Foley had with his wife, Olive and son, Tony were revealed during his funeral mass in St Flannan’s Church, Killaloe on Friday. Olive recalled the last time she spoke to her husband was last Saturday week, just hours before he passed away from a heart attack at the Munster team hotel in Paris. “We chatted about the lads and how they were getting on in the athletics, and how Tony was faring in the javelin.” “Tony had a chat with too. It was a lovely conversation… I didn’t know it would be our last,” she said, breaking down. During a heart-rendering tribute, she praised her “soul mate” with whom she had spent “seventeen wonderful years” of marriage. She drew laughter from the packed church of 500 several times, describing life with Anthony, affectionately known as “Axel” and their two boys Tony and Dan. Anthony Foley, the family man, was the central theme of the homily at his funeral mass in St Flannan’s Church, Killaloe today (Friday). The homily, which reflected on the gentle side of a man who was a formidable presence on the rugby field, was delivered by Clarecastle parish priest, Fr Pat Malone, a long time friend of the Foley family. Fr Pat said, “My first words and thoughts today go to you Olive, to [sons Tony and Dan, [parents] Shelia and Brendan, [sisters] Rosie and Orla; and they are simple words we use at funerals when we don’t know what to say. ‘I am sorry for your trouble’. These words say it all today. Gardaí will have a strict traffic plan in place for the funeral in Killaloe tomorrow (Friday) of Munster and Ireland rugby star, Anthony Foley. The funeral mass will take place at St Flannan’s Church, Killaloe at 12 noon, with burial after in Relig Nua graveyard. A one way system will be in place around Killaloe along the R463 with the junction of Killaloe Bridge, to Abbey Street Covent Hill, right onto Crossroads, Thomas Street, Chapel Street, left onto New Street and back onto the main Scariff Road – R463. To enable the free flowing of the one way system the following junctions will be closed off to traffic: ·         New Street/ Main Street junction ·         Thomas/Chapel Street junction ·         St Flannan’s Road / Main Street junction ·         St Flannan’s Road/ Covent Hill junction ·         New Street / Ogonnelloe Road junction ·         The Green / main Killaloe square will be free of all traffic for the rest of Thursday and Friday. Anthony Foley’s remains are to be flown home from Paris to Shannon Airport tomorrow, Wednesday, from where they will be brought to his family home (private) in Killaloe. The Munster rugby coach and former Ireland player died in a hotel in the French capital over the weekend, hours before his team was due to play  in a European Cup game. Anthony Foley’s remains will lie in repose at St Flannan’s Church, Killaloe from 1pm to 8.30pm on Thursday evening. People intending on paying their respects to Anthony are encouraged to attend early. The funeral mass will take place at 12 noon on Friday at St Flannan’s Church, with the church reserved for family and friends only. Burial afterwards will be at Relig Núa Cemetery, Killaloe.

  Ireland and Munster rugby families are united in mourning following the tragic death of Munster head coach Anthony Foley (42) at the team hotel in Paris. Munster’s European Champions Cup game against Racing 92 has been cancelled as a mark of respect to Anthony, his family, players, management and staff. On Sunday afternoon, a minute silence was observed at the Clare senior hurling final between Clonlara and Ballyea as a mark of respect to Anthony. Books of Condolence will be opened across Munster on Monday, October 17 in memory of Anthony. As a mark of respect the seven local authorities in Munster – Clare County Council; Cork City Council; Cork County Council; Kerry County Council; Limerick City and County Council; Tipperary County Council; Waterford City and County Council will open books of condolence at 12 noon. A WELL-known Italian deli and wine bar in Killaloe is supporting a small town in Central Italy, which was left destroyed by the recent devastating earthquake. Ponte Vecchio is appealing to people and businesses in the twin communities of Ballina and Killaloe to make a donation to its collection for Amatrice. It is being organised by the owner Andrew Lofthouse and his friend Antonello Allocco, who have kept in regular contact with each other since they forged a strong friendship in their 20s in Rome, where they grew up. Amatrice bore the brunt of a massive earthquake that demolished at least half of the town. Amatrice “is not here anymore”, the city’s mayor said after the August 24 quake, which registered 6.2 magnitude on the Richter scale. The quake killed at least 278 people throughout Central Italy, including an elderly couple whose home collapsed on them. Fifty-three of the people who died were from Amatrice, a heavy toll for the …
