Ballina Handball Club has installed a new defibrillator costing an estimated €1,600 on the outside wall of their handball alley for the benefit of the club and residents. This latest initiative is part of the club’s drive to increase the provision of facilities for the benefit of the local national school and the local community. The first part of this drive was the introduction of dads and lads as well as mothers and others in the handball alley to encourage people to engage in a fun physical exercise without the commitment of training for or entering a competition. This started about three weeks ago and already it is proving very popular with people who never played handball previously. Teaming up with Defibs for Life in Nenagh, the club contacted this organisation who was delighted to supply a defibrillator on the proviso they would receive a donation. Clare handball is celebrating a magnificent All-Ireland double this Saturday evening. At Kingscourt in Cavan this afternoon Diarmaid Nash (Tuamgraney) and Colin Crehan (Kilkishen) captured the senior doubles 40 x 20 title when they defeated the holders Paul Brady and Michael Finnegan from Cavan. This was a repeat of last year’s final which the Cavan pair won but this time they had to settle for the runners up spot as the Clare pair turned in a superb display The holders won the opening game 21-15 but Nash and Crehan levelled the contest with a 21-14 second game win. In the tie break third game the Claremen were always in control and won on a 21-3 scoreline bot bring this title to Clare for the first time since 1979 when the Kirby brothers from Tuamgraney were champions. By Seamus Hayes CLARE’S Willie Roche took over as president of the GAA Handball, at the organisation’s annual congress in The Inn at Dromoland last weekend. Mr Roche from the Newmarket-on-Fergus club has had a long career in handball, first as a player and then as an administrator. He has fulfilled many roles including, most recently, that of chairman of the Munster Handball Council. He becomes the third Clare official to hold the prestigious post following in the footsteps of Caimin Jones, also Newmarket-on-Fergus, and Michael Boyce. In his address, Mr Roche spoke of his delight at securing the position and reflected on his involvement over a long period in the game. He outlined his plans for the next three years, as he seeks to progress the game at all levels. IT has been a busy week in the Coughlan household, as father and son, Fergal Snr and Jnr, captured Munster titles. On Wednesday of last week, Fergal Snr captured Clare’s first Munster title of the yea, when he defeated Cork’s Denis Quinn to take the Provincial Masters A singles title in Galbally, Limerick on a scoreline of 21-16, 21-11. His son, Fergal Jnr, who at just 16 years-of-age, captured the Munster minor title in defiant style in Tuamgraney on Monday evening in front of a packed gallery. This was an extra special final for County Clare handball follower,s as it was contested between two of Clare’s brightest handball talents, Colin Corbett of Tulla and Fergal Coughlan of Clooney. Both players got off to a tentative start with serves and aces exchanging hands on numerous occasions before Coughlan won the first game by the narrowest of margins, 21-20. Read More »Tragic death of young sportsman
ONE of East Clare’s leading young sportsmen died in a traffic accident on the M7, near Roscrea on Sunday night. Eighteen-year-old Barry Nash from Tobarnagoth, Scariff was a noted hurler and handball player, excelling in both codes. Barry was an All-Ireland and world champion in handball and a key member the Scariff senior hurling side. A brother of international handballer, Diarmuid, Barry was travelling back to college in Dublin with three friends, when the accident happened. Barry’s death has caused great sadness in the East Clare community. He reposed at his home and his funeral mass will take place at Scariff Church on Thursday, after which he will be buried at the New Cemetery, Moynoe.
