A multi-agency air and sea rescue operation was mounted in Galway Bay yesterday evening after a fisherman was reported missing. Following an intensive search the man was recovered from the water and removed to Galway University Hospital where he has since died. The Irish Coastguard was alerted at about half past three by a local fisherman who came across a local fishing boat with its engine running and no one on board, in an area south of Tawn Island off Maree, Oranmore, south of Galway Bay. Galway RNLI Lifeboat launched from Galway Docks and were joined by the Aran Island All weather RNLI Lifeboat, the Irish Coastguard Helicopter from Shannon and the Casla Bay Coastguard Lifeboat. Within an hour they were joined in the search by nine local fishing boats from across the bay. Three men whose sailboat hit rocks after its engine cut out were rescued by Galway RNLI Lifeboat over the bank holiday weekend. The three were sailing close to Kinvara Bay when the accident happened. One of the men raised the alarm and the Irish Coastguard requested the assistance of Galway Lifeboat. Two local fishing boats were in the vicinity at the time, one of which assisted in the rescue operation. The sailboat was not badly damaged and was towed to the Galway Bay Sailing Club in Renville with the three men on board. A Lifeboat crew member also went on board to assist in the tow operation. The three men did not require medical assistance. The lifeboat volunteer crew on this call out were Dave Oliver (Helmsman), Olivia Byrne, Dave Badger and Greg Cullen.
