Man passes away in hospital after Ennis road traffic incident

Gardaí have confirmed that a motorist who was reported to be in a critical condition following a road traffic incident near Ennis on Monday, has died in hospital. A Garda spokesperson confirmed: “The male driver of the vehicle, aged in his 40s, was taken to University Hospital Limerick where he later passed away. The coroner has been notified. The N85 Ennis Bypass has since reopened to traffic.” The alarm was raised shortly after 12.30pm on Monday when emergency services received reports of a collision on the N85 Western Relief Road near Ennis. The route connects the M18 motorway with roads to West and North Clare. It’s understood that a vehicle was seen colliding with a roadside barrier at least once before coming to a stop on the footpath. West Clare fatality

Clare Gardaí are investigating the death of a woman in her fifties after a single vehicle accident in West Clare. The incident happened at around 11pm on Friday near Miltown Malbay. The woman was the only occupant of the vehicle when her car left the road and entered a field. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was removed to University Hospital Limerick (UHL) where it is expected a post mortem will be conducted. The road was closed off for an examination by forensic collision investigators. This is the 13th fatality since last Sunday.

Lough Derg fatality despite extensive rescue efforts

A woman in her late sixties died after falling into the water in Lough Derg in the early hours of Sunday morning, despite an extensive rescue operation. The incident happened at the marina near the village of Dromineer on the shores of Lough Derg. The RNLI based at Dromineer was tasked by the Valentia Coastguard Marine Coordination Centre at about 1.15 and were told there were two people in the water. Within about seven minutes, the RNLI crew of three volunteers were on the water and learned that only one person remained in the water. It is understood that a man entered the water with a view to saving the woman but was unable to do so. After leaving the water, he then contacted the emergency services. The Shannon coastguard helicopter Rescue 115 was also tasked to assist in the rescue operation.
