Ennis priest shares memories of the late John Hume

THE late John Hume was a man with a “vision of justice for all”, according to Ennis’ Parish Priest Fr Tom Ryan, who came to know the Nobel Peace Prize winning politician while working in Derry in the 1980s.   Following his ordination in 1984 Fr Tom was appointed to St Eugene’s Cathedral in Derry, where on Wednesday Mr Hume was laid to rest. Sharing his memories of the prominent politician who played a leading role in talks which led to the Good Friday Agreement, Fr Tom told us, “Over the years I would have gotten to know the family. John was the politician who was on the go all the time, and his wife Pat was the one who kept the show going on the ground in many ways. “He was the man who had the vision, and who wanted to implement his vision of justice for all. Philadelphia here comes SON

IT’S a case of Philadelphia Here I Come for Ennis musician SON, Susan O’Neill, however she won’t be breaking any Covid-19 travel restrictions. SON has been named among 18 Irish acts who will perform virtually at the Philadelphia Folk Festival on Saturday, August 15, with the support of Culture Ireland. For the first time ever, the festival has dedicated a full day of its programme to performances by Irish musicians. Looking ahead to her performance she said, “It’s really great to be included in the Philadelphia Folk Festival line up this year. Technology can be so wonderful and this is one of the ways it can help us to keep sharing music with music lovers across the world. 7 new confirmed Covid cases in Clare

SEVEN new cases of Covid-19 have been reported today (Monday) in Clare, according to the Department of Health. The news will raise concerns over spikes in recent days in the county, with 11 cases confirmed last Thursday. There have been no new deaths reported to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre today, for the fourth day in a row. There has now been a total of 1,763 COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland. As of midnight Sunday, August 2, the HPSC has been notified of 46 confirmed cases of COVID-19. There is now a total of 26,208 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland. Of the cases notified today; 27 are men / 19 are women 85% are under 45 years of age 32 are associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case 5 cases have been identified as community transmission 15 cases are located in Kildare, 8 in Laois, 7 in Clare, 5 in Offaly and the remaining 11 …

Sunday update: 53 new Covid cases, no increase in Clare

  A TOTAL of 53 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 have been reported today (Sunday) to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre. There are no new confirmed cases in Clare. No additional deaths have been notified nationally. According to the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET)  has now been a total of 1,763 Covid-19 related deaths in Ireland. As of midnight Saturday, August 1, there is a total of 26,162 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland. Of the cases notified today; 27 are men / 26 are women 80% are under 45 years of age 45 are associated with outbreaks or close contacts of a confirmed case 4 cases have been identified as community transmission 25 cases are located in Dublin, 19 in Laois, 6 in Kildare and the remaining 3 are spread across two other counties. No new Clare Covid cases ahead of Bank Holiday safety appeal

NO new cases of Covid-19 have been detected in Clare today. That’s according to the latest figures from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET), who are appealing for people to follow infection control guidelines over the Bank Holiday Weekend. It follows concern over a spike of 11 confirmed cases reported on Thursday. Today (Friday) the HPSC has been notified of 38 confirmed cases of COVID-19. There is now a total of 26,065 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland.  There have been no new deaths reported to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre today. The total number of Covid-19 related fatalities to-date remains at 1,763. 11 more Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Clare

Eleven additional Covid-19 cases have been diagnosed in Clare bringing to 22 the total number of new cases in the county since last weekend. Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ronan Glynn said that as of midnight Wednesday, July 29, the HPSC has been notified of 85 confirmed cases of Covid-19. There is now a total of 26,027 confirmed cases of the virus in Ireland. The 11 cases in Clare represent the second largest increase in the county since June 1 when a total of 37 new cases were confirmed. The HSE also confirmed that the eight cases announced on Tuesday are new, and that some of them relate to a cluster in the Ennis area. It follows on from the three additional cases announced on Sunday, which brought a five-week run of being Covid-free to an end in Clare. Clare businesses receive €3.5m in restart grants

Clare businesses have received €3,441,338 to date from the Government’s Covid-19 Restart Grant to help them get back on their feet. The figures were confirmed by local Fine Gael TD Joe Carey who said: “Clare County Council is responsible for administering the Government’s Restart Grant and has confirmed that small and micro businesses in Clare have now been allocated just under €3,5 million so far. “This is crucial to helping local businesses to get back on their feet after what has been an extremely difficult few months. The funding is designed to help businesses with the costs associated with reopening and re-employing workers following Covid-19 closures. Businesses can avail of between €2,000 and €10,000 for this purpose. “Getting these businesses back open is so important to the revival of our local economy here in Clare as they are such important employers.” Deputy Carey said his colleague, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Leo Varadkar is overseeing “targeted supports” …
