Toxic working environment at Coast Guard, claim Clare TDs

A TOXIC culture of bullying faces volunteers with the Irish Coastguard, two Clare TDs have claimed in the wake of the decision last week to stand down the Doolin unit. Six members of the north Clare unit resigned early last week, causing the unit to be benched. One source that is close to the Doolin Coastguard said that claims of “bullying and harassment” that led to the departure of the six volunteers from the unit was not caused by the 12 remaining members. Speaking in the Dáil, independent Michael McNamara said, “We need to get the Doolin Coast Guard unit reinstated but we need to address the issues that led us to where we are because the reality is there is a toxic working environment in the Coast Guard station in Doolin and there has been for some time. “Unfortunately it is not unique to Doolin; it exists the length and breadth of this country. 100 jobs for Shannon

A GLOBAL bio-pharma company is expanding its operations and has decided to invest in Shannon, resulting in the creation of up to 100 new high-end jobs, Clare TD Joe Carey has confirmed. Deputy Carey said the announcement by MeiraGTx that it is to bolster its employee headcount with a new facility in Shannon is a “fantastic boost” for the local economy. He described the announcement as a “major shot in the arm” for Shannon and the entire region. “This is fantastic news for Clare and the Mid-West, particularly in light of the pandemic and the huge pressure it has brought to bear on Shannon Airport and many local industries,” the Clarecastle-based TD said. “It is also a massive vote of confidence in the area from an innovative international bio-pharma company that clearly sees the long-term benefits and potential of investing in Shannon and the Mid-West. Carey camp were ‘fairly down’ after Champion poll

THREE of the four TDs addressed the crowd at the count centre in the Falls Hotel, with Timmy Dooley the sole absentee. Acknowledging  things didn’t look good a few weeks ago Joe Carey said, “When the Clare Champion poll came out we were fairly down. People said we’ll give you a vote but you probably don’t have a chance,” he said  of the poll that predicted his political demise. He quipped, “I’d like to say thank you to the Clare Champion,” something that was met with cheers and laughter from his supporters, who were in flying form after their man’s win. Pat Breen said it it was “a very difficult campaign” and promised the four TDs will work for the county which he says must benefit from the recovery. Breen and Carey take last two seats

Results of the 12th and final count results are in, Breen and Carey both elected without reaching the quota. Breen (FG) +1,796  10,088 Carey (FG) +1,984  9,915 McDonagh (FF) +833 7,762 McDonagh was excluded as the lowest remaining candidate.   Clare has returned two FG candidates (Breen and Carey), one FF (Timmy Dooley) and one independent (Michael Harty). The FG success comes about due to vote management as they actually took approximately 26% of the vote compared to FF’s 31%.
