With four out of five Clare representatives exiting their respective Munster Senior Post-Primary Championships this week, all eyes are on Ardscoil Rís (Senior A Hurling) and CBS Ennistymon (Senior C Hurling) who are bidding for provincial final places this Saturday. Ardscoil Rís’ 17-strong Clare contingent, along with mentor Paul Flanagan, will be determined to make amends for last year’s Munster Under 19A Final reverse to St Joseph’s Tulla as despite going on to secure All-Ireland honours, it was their only Harty Cup Final reverse in six attempts. Nine Banner natives saw action in their rousing quarter-final finish against Our Lady’s Templemore but they will be wary of a scorned Cashel Community School who suffered their only defeat against the Limerick college by a goal at the group stages only three months ago. Having already secured redemption to win the Dean Ryan honours, Ardscoil will require their best display of the campaign if they are to double the dose against Cashel …

Eoin Brennan was in Caherlohan to see St Flannan’s College produce a devastating display sweeping Ardscoil Rís aside on a score of 5-25 to 1-3 THERE was an almost incredible 57 point turnaround from last year’s U15A final as St Flannan’s exacted full revenge on holders Ardscoil Rís to clinch their first Clare Under 15A title in Caherlohan on Thursday evening. The development competition promotes and prepares Clare players for the provincial championships which begin in January and given the large Clare contingents at schools like Limerick’s Ardscoil Rís and St Munchin’s and Galway’s Gort also features these teams from outside the Banner. Ardscoil’s outstanding inaugural title win 12 months previously proved a stepping stone to recent Dean Ryan Cup success whereas this time around, it was an exceptional St Flannan’s panel that showcased their pace, movement and scoring prowess in a devastating display. The schools’ great rivalry isn’t merely to do with their strong Clare links that saw …

Eoin Brennan watched as 27 players from Clare competed in a tight affair that saw the Limerick school through to the knockout stages on a score of 0-12 to 0-10 CLARE’S Harty Cup interests rest solely on Ardscoil Rís’ shoulders after a brace of injury-time points edged an understandably anxious final group decider against St Flannan’s College in O’Garney Park, Sixmilebridge on Wednesday afternoon. With defending champions St Joseph’s Tulla bowing out against Midleton CBS, all eyes remained on a compelling Group 1 showdown between these heavyweights that saw 27 Clare natives play their part and even pitting Ballyea protagonists Paul Flanagan and Jack Browne against each other on the sideline. For St Flannan’s, having already lost to Cashel Community College, it was simply a must-win tie, with the only way that the Croke Cup holders could exit the competition would be with a six point win for the Ennis side. What followed was an anxious end-to-end slugfest that could …

Eoin Brennan reports from Nenagh as an Eoin Begley brace was critical to Ardscoil Rís defeating Thurles CBS 3-19 to 1-23 in the Munster Under 16.5A PPS Hurling Championship Final SIX Clare natives played an integral part as Ardscoil Rís finally prevailed in a nervy finale to secure their first Dean Ryan Cup in six years in MacDonagh Park, Nenagh on Wednesday afternoon. Having suffered heartbreaking back-to-back final defeats, the Limerick hurling powerhouse finally inched over the line at the third attempt, with the Banner once more central to that success as five different players contributed 2-10 of their side’s tally. Clonlara’s Eoin Begley starred with two superb opportunist strikes to put clear daylight between the sides by the break at 2-10 to 0-10 while Michael Collins (3), Cillian Murphy (3) and Marc O’Brien (2) also chipped with timely points. Joint-captain Eoin Carey arrowed over the clinching free from halfway to finally cement only Ardscoil’s third title at this level. …

All-Ireland Senior A Post-Primary Schools Hurling Championship Final Ardscoil Rís (Limerick) 1-17 St Kieran’s College (Kilkenny) 0-15 CLARE pair Niall O’Farrell and David Kennedy combined for 1-11 as Ardscoil Rís shattered their Croke Cup Final hoodoo in style in Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day. Having been defeated in three previous All-Ireland deciders to St Kieran’s College, the Limerick college, co-managed by Paul Flanagan, Cormac O’Donovan and Niall Moran, exacted full revenge with a powerful final 40 minutes in which they outscored the roll of honour leaders by 1-13 to 0-9 to run out deserving breakthrough winners. Seven of Ardscoil Rís’ 14 strong Banner contingent played their part on the greatest stage of all, with Broadford’s Niall O’Farrell in particular excelling after suffering his own set-back when a 20th minute penalty was saved. Trailing by two at the time, O’Farrell’s answer was to snatch the final by the scruff of the neck with five of a seven point unanswered rally …

Eoin Brennan speaks to Ardscoil joint-manager Niall Moran ahead of Saturday’s Harty decider Niall Moran has been there from the start of the Ardscoil Rís’ hurling evolution. After breaking new ground throughout the knock-out stages in the late noughties, the Limerick City college finally reached a first Harty Cup Final in 2010 albeit that it took three attempts before finally getting over Thurles CBS in an epic decider series. It would be the first of five Harty Cup triumphs in as many finals, an enviable record highlighted by contesting nine of the last twelve semi-finals. However, while the school do have a superb recent tradition and winning know-how, joint-manager Moran is quick to point out that it’s firmly uncharted waters for the current side. “Given the last two years, it’s brilliant for the whole school to be back in a Harty Final. It’s new territory for all these boys though as it’s their first time in a Harty Final, no …

Clare Post Primary Schools U-15 Hurling Cup Final Ardscoil Rís 6-12 St Flannan’s College, Ennis 1-4 A salvo of goals at the start of each half sealed an ultimately easy win in the Clare Post Primary schools U-15 Division 1 Cup over St Flannan’s in Gurteen on Thursday night, reports Michael O’Connor. Ground conditions were very much playable but the northern cold wind and the spitting rain at time gave no comfort to spectators and players alike. Six of the starting Na Piarsaigh players were from Sixmilebridge and Cratloe and were to the fore in this win contributing 4-7 of the winner’s tally. Ardscoil Rís played aided by the strong wind in the first-half as St Flannan’s defended in depth yet there was absolutely nothing within the powers of the St Flannan’s players that could contain the hard running attack of Ardscoil led by Cratloe’s Marc O’Brien. The first score came after two minutes with a goal by Cillian Murphy …
