THE managing director of Shannon Airport Andrew Murphy is leaving his position. Last Friday, Shannon Group released a statement stating that he had informed the company that he would be taking up another position, also in the aviation sector. Mr Murphy joined Shannon Group in March 2014 as chief commercial officer and took up the role of managing director of Shannon Airport in February 2017. Mary Considine, CEO, Shannon Group said, “Andrew has played an instrumental role at Shannon Group since the early days of its establishment and we are very appreciative of his dedication and hard work throughout his career with us. I would like to wish him every success and happiness in his new career.” Mr Murphy’s departure comes shortly after the resignation of Niall O’Callaghan, who was managing director of Shannon Heritage. The Wild Atlantic Way is one hour from winning even more tourists for 2018 thanks to a world-first social media competition that has seen Shannon Airport shortlisted for a Cologone, Germany route. Shannon will vie with two other airports – Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Trapani in Italy – in a vote-off in the first ever Facebook competition for an airline service. The novel competition by Eurowings offers the opportunity to regions to have a direct service to Cologne on its summer schedule for next year. The service would be another major boost to tourism along the western seaboard, with the German demand growing for the unique and increasingly popular Wild Atlantic Way offering. The strength of tourism across the regions will be emphasised on Sunday next when Shannon Airport operates its largest number of transatlantic destinations in 17 years with the commencement of two Norwegian Air International services. Two weekly flights to Stewart International Airport, Orange County – just 90 minutes from New York – and two weekly flights to Providence Green Airport, Rhode Island will be added to the already strong Shannon US schedule. SHANNON Airport’s route promotion endeavours have won international recognition again as it claimed the ‘Highly Commended’ award for Airports under 4m passengers at the Routes Europe Airport Marketing Awards in Marseille. The only Irish airport shortlisted for what are the most prestigious awards in the aviation industry in Europe, Shannon received the recognition for its exploits in marketing the airport over the past 12 months. The City of Airport Bremen was the outright winner of the awards, with Shannon ‘Highly Commended’ in its category ahead of John Paul II International Airport, Kraków-Balice, Poland; George Enescu International Airport, Bacau, Romania; Begishevo Airport, Russia; and David the Builder Kutaisi International Airport, Georgia.
