O’Brien Takes Over As Miltown Manager

The defending Clare Senior Football champions have appointed a new manager. Former Clare selector David O’Brien takes over his native club from Michael Neylon. It’s his second stint in charge of the west Clare club, having guided them to the 2013 intermediate title before reaching the SFC Quarter Finals 12 months later. Kerry’s David Geaney will continue as coach with the rest of the backroom team to be finalized in the next week. Club chairman Frank Minogue has welcomed the news, saying he was their number one candidate for the role and they’re delighted to have him on board.

There is a revolution underway in Kilkee under the watchful eye of Jim Fitzpatrick’s mural of the most famous revolutionary of all. Anyone who was out for a Sunday morning stroll last weekend along the strand under the watchful eye of Che Guevara would have been met with the sight of men and women, young and old, parading with hurleys and helmets as Kilkee/Bealaha Hurling and Camogie club were in full flight. The move to develop adult hurling is still in its infancy, but it is fair to say that those who are overseeing it have long since moved beyond that stage. There have been many instances of hurling on the strand in Kilkee down through the years, and stalwarts like Michael O’Neill and Paddy McDonnell can recall many of them. Clare take on Wexford this Sunday in Cusack Park in round four of the National Hurling League, with the Leinster side to be led into Ennis by former Clare All-Ireland winning player and manager Davy Fitzgerald. The home side come into the game off the back of a disappointing loss to Cork last weekend while Wexford battled past Tipperary to pick up their second win of the campaign. Sunday’s game will mark the first time Davy Fitzgerald has returned to Cusack Park as the opposition since taking up the role in the south-east, but facing Clare is not something new to the Sixmilebridge man, with the Banner ending Wexford’s championship season at the quarter-final stage last year. The Slaneysiders have made a strong start to this season’s campaign, as they recovered from an opening round loss to Limerick before wins over Cork and Tipperary. Social media lit up this past week as David Brady decided it was appropriate to impart his opinion as to why Gaoth Dobhair lost out to Corofin in the All-Ireland club football semi-final. The former Mayo midfielder tweeted: “They will when the dust settles & time passes in a quiet moment ask did they pass up the opportunity of a lifetime. Was there anything they could have done extra. Posting multiple piss ups won’t win you All Ireland’s & that’s not what winning is about. ” He was of course referencing the celebrations that small club in Donegal had enjoyed when winning the Ulster title for the first time in the club’s history with a one point win after extra time against Scotstown. For a regular 14-year-old Junior Cert student, having a week off for mid-term after completing mock exams would mean a chance to have a lie-in for a few days. Rhys Williams does not fall into that category though. Instead of taking it easy this week, he is up at 7am each day to muck out for the horses in Parc Stables. He does not mind though, mainly because he does not know any other routine. 2018 was a year to remember for the youngster as he won the individual gold medal at the FEI European Championships in Fontainebleau in France, while also picking up silver in the team event. THE Clare County Juvenile Championships were held in Lisdoonvarna last weekend, in conjunction with the Doolin Boxing Club tournament, before a capacity crowd in the Pavilion Theatre. Fynn Randall took the 48kg title in style, beating Ennis Boxing Club favourite Joseph O’Brien, while Sadhbh Blood took the 63kg title to advance to the Munster Girls Championships in April. Kilfenora’s Stephen Murphy upset the odds with a pristine performance against Doolin’s Eoin Kelly in the final of the 35kg boys class. There were outstanding displays from James Manning and Colin Fitzpatrick from the Ennis Club, against Kilfenora’s Dean Downes and Josh Moloney. RORY McIlroy has said he will not play at the Irish Open in Lahinch this summer. He has said he will not be playing there, because he will be focusing on the British Open in Portrush. Speaking to BBC Northern Ireland he said, “If there is ever a year when I feel I can miss this Irish Open, it’s this year. If I was to play the Irish Open, The Open Championship would be my third event in a row. For me, that’s not the best way to prepare for what could be the biggest event of my life.”

Aidan ‘Horse’ Moloney has been appointed as manager of Kilmurry Ibrickane for the 2019 season. The 1992 Munster championship winner is back with his native club just 12 months after stepping down from the role. He previously led the Bricks to the championship in 2016 and 2017, before making the switch to Cooraclare for a second stint there last year. He also has the distinction of captaining the west Clare outfit to victory on two occasions in 1993 and 2002, while he won four titles with the club along with a Munster club title before hanging up his boots in 2005. His backroom is yet to be finalised, as thoughts turn towards Kilmurry’s bid to win a ninth straight Cusack Cup title when the new season gets underway next month.

Clare have suffered their second defeat of the NHL after a 1-20 to 0-20 loss against Cork in Pairc ui Rinn. The sides were level at the break, with Seamus Harnedy’s fortuitous goal helping the Rebels to parity. His shot from distance deceived the Banner defence and dropped to the net. There have been many obituaries written in memory of the great game of Gaelic football over the last few years. Pundits have lamented the seemingly long forgotten days of the catch and kick game that brought the likes of Mick O’Connell, the Bomber Liston and the mighty Tom Morrissey to prominence. Gone, we are told, are the days when the game was played out between 30 men who would fight to the death in a survival of the fittest. Tributes have been flooding in after the passing of former Portsmouth great and Clare man Mick Kennedy. The former Republic of Ireland international passed away last weekend at 57 years of age, having spent his later years in Ennistymon. Mick’s parents hailed from Kilmaley, and moved to Salford where Mick was born in 1961. His first club was Halifax, and during his career he made over 500 league appearances for 10 different clubs. Described as the quintessential hard-man in midfield, Kennedy was known for his no nonsense style. Portsmouth was where he came to real prominence, after he was signed by the then manager Alan Ball for a fee of £100,000. He quickly became a cult figure at the club, and captained his beloved Pompey to the First Division in 1987. He made 144 appearances for Portsmouth, and in 2018 was inducted into their Hall of Fame. Clare’s epic 2024 season that saw them capture the Liam MacCarthy Cup for the first time since 2013 and the Allianz League title for the first time since 2016 sees them deservingly dominate the list of PwC Hurling All-Stars nominees announced this morning. The Banner braves are the standout contingent in the list of 45 names and have 14 players nominated across all areas of the field. In addition, star forward Shane O’Donnell is nominated for PwC GAA/GPA Hurler of the Year where he is joined by Cork’s midfield dynamo Darragh Fitzgibbon and Limerick’s defensive rock Kyle Hayes. The PwC GAA/GPA Young Hurler of the Year nominees are Clare’s Adam Hogan, Cork’s Eoin Downey and Limerick’s Cathal O’Neill. There are eight counties represented in total. On initial viewing, the race for the Fr. Murray Memorial Cup (intermediate camogie) appears fairly straight-forward. After all, with all three semi-finalists from 2023 (Tulla, Whitegate and Éire Óg) and senior demotee Clooney-Quin split evenly between the two groups, the business end overtly looks clear-cut. Clooney-Quin’s senior experience along with negotiating their way to intermediate glory as recently as 2021 makes them the stand-out candidates, with Tulla currently ranking a close second having contested back-to-back intermediate finals, three if you include the replay in 2022 against eventual champions Clarecastle/Ballyea. They won’t want to see another mid-Clare side join them in the second tier but for Tulla, it’s all about learning from their previous deciders and leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of reaching the promised land of senior. Current kingpins Truagh-Clonlara and Scariff-Ogonnelloe may have switched roles last October after the latter’s two year reign but having clashed in the last three finals, they will be overwhelming favourites to do so once more come October 19th. It’s up to the chasing pack to alter that perceived narrative as with only the finalists seeded for this year’s race for the McMahon Cup, the groups initially appear a bit lopsided. After all, with three of last year’s semi-finalists (Scariff-Ogonnelloe, Inagh-Kilnamona and Feakle-Killanena) pooled in Group B, the fact that there are two business end berths means that one major contender has to fall at the group stages. The resilience shown by Clare hurlers Ryan Taylor and Tony Kelly to battle back from serious injuries has been lauded by team physiotherapist for the last three years, Shane Malone. 900 million fans shows the popularity of volleyball

Volleyball is one of the most popular sports there is with over 900 million fans worldwide. That fanbase is growing all the time and the sport consistently ranks in the top five of the most watched global sports. At the end of the month Ireland will head to San Marino for the CEV SCA (European Volleyball Small Countries Association) Championship where they will face Scotland, Malta, Northern Ireland and hosts San Marino in the group stages.
