THERE was more great news for Clare handball at the weekend when Clare juveniles participated in the Cumann na mBunscoil Munster championships.
In Dungarvan, the A championships took place at the Augustinian College, where the Clare team consisted of Fergal Coughlan (captain), Brian Fahy, Jamie Keane, Clodagh Nash, Garry Cooney, Shane Hunt, Ian Murray and Kevin Conlon. Clare beat Waterford in the semi-final and then contested the final against a very strong Cork side. From the outset, the Clare team fought valiantly and did not relent in their quest for championship glory and the chance to bring back the title to Clare for a fourth year in-a-row. With 10 aces between the sides leading into the last doubles pairing, it was all down to Clare’s Fergal Coughlan and Clodagh Nash, the only girl in the competition, to keep that margin. The Clare pairing did exactly that and Clare won the title on a final scoreline of 84 to 52.
In Cappagh, Clare’s other team contested the B Munster championship. The team consisted of David Gleeson, Barry Loughnane, Jake Kearney, Eoin O’Hara, Eoin Whelan, Cathair Agnew, Kieran Agnew and David Sheedy. The Clare youngsters played Cork in the final. In all, Clare were much too strong for their opponents, with David Gleeson providing the firepower and the young Agnew brothers showing great footwork on the court.
