Five taken to hospital following road traffic collision in Miltown Malbay

Five people were taken to hospital following a road traffic collision in Clare on Sunday evening. The two-car crash occurred at around 6.30pm on the N67 Spanish Point road out of Miltown Malbay about 500m from the town’s square and outside the local GAA field.

Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Ennistymon station responded to the scene along with National Ambulance Service paramedics and Gardaí. A total of five people were injured in the collision while firefighters had to use specialist cutting equipment to help free the injured from the wreckage. It’s understood there were four people travelling in one vehicle and just the driver in the second.
All five were transported by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. It’s understood that one person was seriously injured but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The others are not believed to have been seriously hurt. The road remain closed overnight while a technical examination of the scene is currently underway way. (11.05am)

A Garda spokesperson confirmed: “Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a two vehicle collision on the N67 outside of Miltown Malbay, Co.Clare at around 6.30pm on Sunday, 18th February 2024. A total of five persons were injured during the incident and all have been taken to Limerick Regional Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The road remains closed at this time. Local diversions are currently in place.”

Meanwhile, on the outskirts of Ennis, a collision involving a car and a motorcycle occurred shortly after 7pm on Sunday. The incident happened on the main N68 Ennis to Kilrush at Kilmorane at the turn off for Ballyea. Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Ennis station responded to that incident along with Gardaí and a number of ambulances from Clare and Limerick.

The motorcyclist was taken to hospital with what’s understood to be a lower limb fracture while his pillion passenger was assessed at the scene before being transported to hospital for further treatment. It’s understood that occupants of the car were uninjured. The scene was examined by Garda Crime Scene Investigation officers before the road was reopened to traffic.

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances of the both collisions.
