Classical concerts for Ennis

ENNIS is the venue for a number of classical concerts taking place this week as part of the Summer Music on the Shannon/Summer Music in Galway (SMS/SMG) Festival.

The first event took place on Wednesday in St Columba’s Church, Bindon Street. For those who missed Wednesday’s opening concert featuring Mozart’s Requiem, there is still time to catch a performance.

On Thursday evening at 8pm, St Columba’s Church will be the setting for a performance celebrating the Golden Age of the Symphony, featuring works by Haydn, Beethoven and Alday. Performing will be cellist Adrian Mantu and the SMS orchestra, conducted by Keith Pascoe.

The music will move to Glór on Friday, where a dramatic new opera for children will be heard. The performance of The Green Children by composer Nicola LeFanu with libretto by Kevin Crossley-Holland will take place at 8pm.

On Saturday, the Anna Carriga Pavillion in Killaloe will be the venue for daytime and evening concerts. This is the 20th anniversary of the festival. Each year, organiser Bob Creech draws from an international pool of high-calibre performers to the West of Ireland for the annual summer music festival.

Also at St Columba’s this Thursday, the lunchtime song recital initiated by Helen Houlihan continues, with baritone Owen Gilhooly and Irina Dernova on piano.
