IN the region of 221 healthcare staff across the UL Hospitals’ Group are self-isolating due to Covid-19 as all routine outpatient appointments and the majority of elective procedures remain cancelled in two public hospitals until Friday, November 20. The UL Hospitals’ Group has confirmed significant reductions in scheduled care at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) and Ennis Hospital have been extended for a further week for patient and staff safety as both hospitals continue to manage a number of outbreaks of Covid-19. Six wards in UHL were closed to admissions last Friday and a total of 188 staff are currently off work and self-isolating across the group, having either tested positive for Covid-19 or being designated as close contacts. NEW figures reveal that Clare had the highest rate in Munster of Covid-19 cases in nursing homes, during the first wave of the pandemic. Data presented in the final report of the Nursing Homes Expert Panel show that this county had more than twice as many cases linked to care home clusters as Limerick. This is despite the fact that County Limerick had a far higher number of cases in the population as a whole (581) than Clare (371), in the period from March to June. Reacting to the figures, the Clare-based Chair of the Dáil Committee on Covid-19 Response confirmed that it will consider calling for a public inquiry into the fate of nursing home residents between March and May. A man who had been arrested following a shooting incident in Tulla on Wednesday morning has been released and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. A 39-year-old man remains in hospital, as gardaí are investigate the circumstances in which a legally held double-barrel shotgun was discharged into his  leg in a private house in Tulla. It is understood that the incident took place at approximately 2am, when gardaí and emergency services were called to the house. An injured man was removed from the house by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick (UHL). Gardaí confirmed that the two men were in the house at the time and had been socialising when the legally held firearm was discharged, wounding the 39-year-old.
