IF you are wandering around Ennis on the afternoon of St Stephen’s Day, you might see some heads bobbing in the Fergus. Don’t worry! That will be members of the Ennis Sub Aqua Club taking part in the annual sponsored Fin Swim. Gerry Gilroy, chair of the club said, “The annual Fin Swim been going on for over 20 years, and is always great fun. All funds raised from the activity go to support the search and recovery activities undertaken by the club.” The swimmers enter the chilly river at Droichead na Gabhar near Lees Road, float along the quiet stretches before rounding the bend to Victoria Bridge on the Lahinch Road. The rapids at the Mill have torn a few wet suits over the years so they get out upstream of the Mill Bridge and jump back into the dark waters at the Mill wheel. MILFORD Care Centre will be the beneficiary of two East Clare fundraising hikes on St Stephen’s Day. The 12 O’Clocks Hills committee has organised two hikes on December 26, for those who would like to stretch their legs in peaceful, beautiful surroundings. The first option is a 13km hike, gathering at 9.45am, at the Belvoir carpark, for a 10am start. The second is an 8.5km hike, assembling at 10.45am, at the Belvoir carpark, for an 11am start. There is no charge to take part, but donations, from those taking part, would be greatly appreciated. For those unable to attend, a donation can be made on Idonate.ie/twelveoclockhills.

BRAVE members of the Ennis Sub Aqua Club will be taking on the cold winter waters of the River Fergus for their annual ‘Fin Swim’ this St Stephen’s Day. The event raises funds for the club and supports its search and recovery activities. The swim will be passing over the falls at the Mill Road and under five bridges, and the club are encouraging people to get out and show their support for the swimmers. Paddy Egan of the club explained, “Each Christmas, divers from the club take to the cold, dark and sometimes frozen waters of the River Fergus in their annual Fin Swim event. “Aside from the help it provides to the club finances, the swim also showcases the club to the town of Ennis, many of whom line the bridges of the town to cheer us along, as we swim through the centre of the town.
