A SHANNON student has been recognised at a national science event for her innovative app that helps visually and hearing-impaired people navigate buildings. Cliodhna Forrestal, 16, from St Patrick’s Comprehensive, was awarded second place in the Technology Software category at Teen Turn SciFest, a competition promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Her project was one of 47 exhibiting at the event in Dublin along with five others from the Comp. The app called ‘Project Breadcrumbs’ helps visually or hearing impaired people to find their way around buildings. In order to learn how to code and to develop her app from a small idea into a real project, Cliodhna worked with Teen-Turn’s Project Squad. Project Squad is a 12-week after-school programme that partners girls with a mentor, who supports them to bring their science idea to life. STUDENTS at Saint Patrick’s Comprehensive will entertain over 1,000 people when they perform the Addams Family Musical over four nights, December 7-10. MUSE Productions are in the final stages of rehearsals for their musical ‘Our House’, which will be performed at St Patrick’s Comprehensive from November 2-5. Our House is based on the music of Madness, the English ska band who achieved huge success in the late 1970s and early ‘80s. Martin McNelis is one of the founding members of Muse and is directing Our House, a musical he is very enthusiastic about. “It’s a wonderful, young musical and that’s probably what attracted us to it. Ei pitches in to redevelop Clare school’s astroturf facility
A REDEVELOPED astroturf facility was officially opened last week at St Patrick’s Comprehensive, with much praise for the generosity of Ei Electronics, who funded it. Ei Electronics has made substantial contributions to numerous local organisations over the years, doing a huge amount to improve the social fabric of Shannon and the wider region. Everything from microchips inserted at birth to predict health problems to self-drive cars with workstations were imagined for a world 50 years from now as 700 students competed at the second Young Innovators competition at Shannon Airport. The students representing schools nationwide were set the tasks of imagining the world 50 years from now and coming up with new business ideas for then across six categories – how we Live, Work, Play, Shop, Learn and Travel. Top honours were claimed by St. Patrick’s Comprehensive, Shannon. The Irish Technology Leaders Group (ITLG) event, in association with LIT, saw the students mentored by representatives from some of the world’s leading companies including Dell, Intel, Analog, Johnson and Johnson, Cook Medical, Zagg and Logitech ahead of submitting their project.
