AN Ennis man who recently returned from a humanitarian mission helping Ukrainians flee the war with Russia is this week embarking on a fundraising mission a little closer to home. This Saturday John Casey, founder of the Tesla Owners Group in Ireland and fellow electric vehicle enthusiast ex international rugby player Peter Bracken, will be setting off on a mammoth trip around Clare to raise funds for the Banner GAA. They will visit every GAA club in the county on their journey of more than 550km. John explains that as well as raising money for capital development at the club the trip will also help challenge the perception that electric vehicles cannot travel long ranges. “There are 52 GAA clubs in County Clare and the distance to be covered is approximately 550km starting and finishing at the Banner GAA grounds in Ennis. A legend in Clare motoring circles is calling it a day this Friday. James Hehir, who started his career in the motor industry almost fifty years ago, will sell his last car this week at Sheils Motor Group, main Ford and Honda dealers on the Gort Road, Ennis. In a neat twist to the story, James’ career began at Sheils in 1971 where he started off straight away in car sales. At the time, the showroom and garage were located in the centre of Ennis, by the river near the CBS. There were only a few car showrooms in Ennis at the time with James recalling just Volkswagen and Morris. Ford, especially in the 1970s were seen almost as an Irish car company with their plant in Cork, the first to be built outside the US in 1917. Read More »Man critical after Ennis crash
A 42 year old pedestrian was left in a critical condition following a crash in Ennis last night (Wednesday). The crash happened around 10pm on the Gort Road, at the small roundabout which is close to the Midwestern Regional Hospital Ennis and McDonald’s. Gardaí say that a car approaching from the Gort side struck a car that was stopped on the roundabout. The first car then careered onwards, mounted the pavement and struck the pedestrian. The man was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick. His injuries are understood to be life threatening. The occupants of the second car, two females aged in their 60s, were also taken to University Hospital Limerick. Their injuries are no thought to be life threatening. The occupants in one of the cars, two males aged 25 and 19 years, fled the scene on foot. They were followed and apprehended by an off duty garda, before being arrested a short distance away.
