Shannon top of the world in aviation awards

Shannon Airport’s global standing as a leading international airport in its class has been reinforced with its selection as winner of the World Routes Marketing Awards 2016 for airports under 4 million passengers. For the second time in three years the airport claimed the ‘Best Marketing of Airports’ award at an overnight event at the New Century Global Centre in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. Other shortlisted airports in the category were Halifax International, Aruba, Belfast City Airport and Cork Airport. The annual Routes Marketing Awards are widely regarded as the most valuable awards in the industry and Shannon’s second win in three years keeps up a remarkable record since the airport was separated in 2013. Both last year and in 2013 Shannon was ‘Highly Commended’ in the category, giving the airport four podium finishes in four successive years since it was separated. Improvements needed at Shannon zone

HOME to over 100 companies and with more than 7,000 employees working there, Shannon Free Zone is one of the largest clusters of indigenous industry outside of Dublin. This week, former senator and county councillor Tony Mulcahy said he feels things are going in the right direction but local Councillor Gerry Flynn has far more reservations about what has been happening there. “Smithstown is full, you can’t get a place to park. There are a good few units available in the industrial estate but a lot of what is there is not great. That is a legacy issue, it wouldn’t exactly be a State secret. They have applied to build new units. The top two bays at the industrial estate have been flattened now, they are in for planning there for office space and small industry,” said Mr Mulcahy. Shannon charity cycle raises €10,000

Over 160 cyclists were recovering their weary limbs but with a great sense of satisfaction after undertaking a 110km round trip straddling Clare and Galway in the Aer Lingus Charity Cycle out of Shannon Airport, which raised €10,000 for Shannon Group’s designated charities. Cyclists from Clare, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Wicklow geared up for the event at Shannon on Saturday morning, having been set off on their merry after the starter flag was raised by Rose of Clare Leah Kenny and Shannon Group Chairman Rose Hynes just after 9am. And in a new addition this year to the popular charity cycle, another 100 participated in relays on static bicycles at Shannon Airport to help raise additional donations, among them airport employees, airport passengers and local businesses. Rose Hynes wins female leader award

SHANNON Group and Origin Enterprises chairman Rose Hynes has been chosen as one of Ireland’s most powerful female business leaders of the year at the annual WXN Women’s Executive Network awards. The awards celebrate the accomplishments of women in business in Ireland and were celebrated at the Network’s Leadership Summit and Awards Gala in Dublin on Thursday. Ms Hynes was one of four Davy Business Leaders award winners in the ‘Most Powerful Women Top 25 Award Winners for 2016’. The New Quay native, who lives in Limerick, played a central role in the separation of Shannon Airport from the State airport’s group in 2013, as she headed up the Aviation Business Development Task Force to report into the Government Steering Group on the future direction of the airport and Shannon Development. New CEO at Shannon Group

Manchester born Matthew Thomas has been appointed as the new chief executive for Shannon Group plc. With 20 years’ experience in the industry, Mr Thomas (43) joins the Shannon Group from the Vantage Airport Group, where he is currently chief commercial officer. Mr Thomas, who has worked with the Vantage Airport Group since 2008, has been involved in the majority of Vantage’s thirty airport projects across four continents, including nineteen significant airport transitions. As chief commercial officer, he has been responsible for leading the implementation of the group’s business development strategy, most recently in New York, where he played a leading role in winning the $4 billion redevelopment contract of the Central Terminal at La Guardia Airport, the largest public-private-partnership in the United States. €7.3m profit for Shannon Group

SHANNON Group made a profit of just under €7.3 million last year. The Group encompasses Shannon Airport, Shannon Commercial Properties, Shannon Heritage and Shannon IASC. Its accounts show that it had total fixed and current assets of €147.5 million and total equity of €120.2 million. There were liabilities of €27.3 million. The accounts show that aeronautical and commercial activities were responsible for €37.76 million in revenue, commercial property rental, management and development for €14.22 million and tourism activities for €13.57 million. Shannon Group saw depreciation of just under €4 million in 2015. Wages and salaries for the year came to €28 million while there were social welfare costs of €2.46 million. On average Shannon Group employed 481 staff during the year. Four hundred and two were in operations and administration, 48 in commercial activities and 31 in property. A Shannon Group delegation is the United States this week attending a number of high-level political and business events to promote the wider region for inward investment and tourism. Representatives are attending events in Washington, Boston, New York and Philadelphia over the course of three days. The delegation is led by chairman Rose Hynes, who will head up the St Patrick’s Day promotion with Shannon Group chief commercial officer, Andrew Murphy and Shannon Group head of marketing, Marie Slattery. Summer departure for Neil Pakey

Neil Pakey is leaving Shannon Group next summer, after its board opted not to renew his contract and Shannon Chamber has expressed disappointment at the Scot’s departure. Chamber president Kevin Thompstone said, “Neil has not just seen the connection between the airport and the region but made and reinforced that connection. He has contributed and delivered many innovative undertakings, which have benefited the airport, the region at large and the entire western seaboard.” Mr Thompstone, who served as chief executive of Shannon Development for eight years, added, “He has a track record of delivering for Shannon and the region.
