Peter O’Connell DONALD J Trump and his family touched down in Shannon airport on Monday morning. The visit represents the billionaire owner of Trump International Golf Links Ireland first visit to the county since his €15 purchase of Doonbeg Golf Club earlier this year. Accompanied, on a private jet, by his sons Donald Junior and Eric and daughter Ivanka, Mr Trump said that his company would “double or triple” their initial outlay in Doonbeg, while he also said that the company would create “many hundreds of jobs.” Healso  confirmed that his company has been in touch with the European Tour, regarding the possibility of The Irish Open being stated in Doonbeg. A CUBAN  man, with a Paris address, who was flying to Cuba to say a final farewell to his terminally ill father, but whose actions aboard the flight resulted in the plane being diverted to Shannon, will now not get to say goodbye. Ronar Caballero Gomez, (37),  with an address at 1 Avenue Becquerelle 92600 Asnieres, Sur Seine, Paris appeared before Ennis District Court in respect of an air rage incident on a Condor Airlines flight from Frankfurt, Germany to Holguin, Cuba, which diverted to Shannon on Wednesday. He was fined €1,000 arising from the incident. Gomez pleaded guilty to engaging in behaviour likely to cause serious offence or annoyance to any person on board the aircraft on April 30; engaging in behaviour of a threatening, abusive or insulting nature by gesture with intent to cause a breach of the peace and being intoxicated on board the flight also on the same date contrary to the Air Navigation and Transport …

TWENTY-two Clare based-companies including Eirtech Aviation, Shannon Aerospace, and Shannon Airport Authority, have been shortlisted for the inaugural Aviation Industry Awards, sponsored by the Irish Aviation Authority. The in inaugural awards, which will be presented on  June 10 in Dublin, have been devised to recognise excellence in the Irish aviation sector which makes a significant contribution to the country’s economy, employing 26,000 people and contributing €4.1 billion to national GDP. “There has been growing demand in recent years for recognition of excellence within the industry,” said Eamonn Brennan, Chief Executive of the Irish Aviation Authority. “This is reflected in the huge level of interest in this first ever Aviation Industry Awards and the very high calibre of the 70 companies and 130 entries submitted. By Fr Brendan Quinlivan Come Sunday, I will be able to boast that I had the privilege of meeting an officially canonised saint of the Church on a few occasions. Having been lucky enough to spend a few years in Rome during my studies for the priesthood, I met St John Paul a few times. One of those privileged moments stands out in a particular way. It happened in September 1992 when the Pope beatified 17 Irish martyrs on the steps of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Students of the Pontifical Irish College returned to Rome early that year to assist the influx of Irish pilgrims who came to participate in the beatification. An added bonus was that we were invited to serve the beatification mass at which Pope John Paul II was to be the celebrant. Early in the morning, a bus arrived at the gates of the Irish College to transport us to St Peter’s. Since we shared …

ON Saturday last,  Bishop Kieran O’Reilly launched the St John Paul car sticker, which features a picture of the man who will be canonised this Sunday, taken when he visited Shannon in 1979. The car sticker features the last recorded photo of the pope on Irish soil, just before he flew to the United States. The stickers encourage people to use the airport when flying and they are available locally, free of charge. The picture on the car stickers was taken by photographer Padraig O’Reilly, who lives in Fergus Drive. Almost 35 years afterwards, he still remembers the image as one that was very hard to get and it caused him a great deal of stress. It was actually his first day working as a freelance photographer, after leaving his job with Shannon Development. A US military transport plane made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport on Thursday evening following a suspected fuel leak over the Atlantic. The United States Navy C130H Hercules aircraft was about 300 kilometres west of Ireland when the crew declared an emergency and requested permission to route back to Shannon. The airport’s emergency plan was put into action with the local authority fire brigade from Shannon Town and Ennis along with the HSE ambulance service were alerted. The flight touched down safely at 4.53pm and parked up on a remote taxiway. The crew confirmed after landing that the fuel leak had stopped.

SHANNON Airport’s route promotion endeavours have won international recognition again as it claimed the ‘Highly Commended’ award for Airports under 4m passengers at the Routes Europe Airport Marketing Awards in Marseille. The only Irish airport shortlisted for what are the most prestigious awards in the aviation industry in Europe, Shannon received the recognition for its exploits in marketing the airport over the past 12 months. The City of Airport Bremen was the outright winner of the awards, with Shannon ‘Highly Commended’ in its category ahead of John Paul II International Airport, Kraków-Balice, Poland; George Enescu International Airport, Bacau, Romania; Begishevo Airport, Russia; and David the Builder Kutaisi International Airport, Georgia. The awards provide the airline community with the chance to have their say as to which airport or destination they think provides the best overall marketing activities to them. SHANNON Airport is in major growth mode this week, as nine new routes commence in five days, delivering a  boost for tourism and business interests. Less than 15 months after the airport was made independent,  Shannon will enjoy its biggest week in almost a decade in terms of new route start-ups, as Ryanair launches new services, to Munich, Paris, Faro, Warsaw, Krakow, Nice, Poitiers, Berlin, Fuerteventura, while Aer Lingus Regional kicks-off a new Bristol service. The 2014 summer season, which officially begins in April, will see 16 service enhancements at Shannon, including the nine new routes.  Among the enhanced services is the now year-round Aer Lingus New York service, which began on Sunday.  This will be a six times weekly service and is the first time Aer Lingus will have operated year-round on New York since 2009. Aer Lingus also  started a new twice weekly Malaga service on Sunday, which will add to the significantly expanded European network to and from the airport this year. “This week is a turning point for Shannon. Not since 2005 has Shannon had a week like this in terms of new …
