Everything from microchips inserted at birth to predict health problems to self-drive cars with workstations were imagined for a world 50 years from now as 700 students competed at the second Young Innovators competition at Shannon Airport. The students representing schools nationwide were set the tasks of imagining the world 50 years from now and coming up with new business ideas for then across six categories – how we Live, Work, Play, Shop, Learn and Travel. Top honours were claimed by St. Patrick’s Comprehensive, Shannon. The Irish Technology Leaders Group (ITLG) event, in association with LIT, saw the students mentored by representatives from some of the world’s leading companies including Dell, Intel, Analog, Johnson and Johnson, Cook Medical, Zagg and Logitech ahead of submitting their project. Some 700 students will touch down in Shannon Airport on Wednesday morning to compete for the The Irish Technology Leaders Group (ITLG) Young Innovators title. The event starts at 10am in the terminal building and will see the students from 15 counties imagine the world 50 years from now in a competition to become Ireland’s ‘Young Innovators’ for 2016. Teams will be tasked with exploring how society will live, work, play, shop, learn and travel half a century away. The winning team will be announced at 4pm following a pitch by a shortlist of finalists and will walk away with not alone the ‘Young Innovators’ title but a dream trip to Silicon Valley, California courtesy of Aer Lingus. Students will have the opportunity over the course of the day to meet with and hear from experts from these companies as well as experts in future technologies from the third level sector. IBEC Mid-West Regional Executive Committee has met at Shannon Airport to discuss the critical need for increased capital investment in infrastructure in the region. The Ibec committee has consistently called on government to deliver more ambitious capital investment for the Mid-West, highlighting the M20 Cork-Limerick road and the N69 Foynes-Limerick road improvement scheme as vital for the future growth of the region. A Shannon Group delegation is the United States this week attending a number of high-level political and business events to promote the wider region for inward investment and tourism. Representatives are attending events in Washington, Boston, New York and Philadelphia over the course of three days. The delegation is led by chairman Rose Hynes, who will head up the St Patrick’s Day promotion with Shannon Group chief commercial officer, Andrew Murphy and Shannon Group head of marketing, Marie Slattery. Shannon Airport has today (Tuesday) conducted a crash-exercise to validate the combined response of the airport together with the support of the primary emergency agencies and other key stakeholders that would react to any aviation incident at the airport. Participating agencies include Shannon airport, Clare County Council, An Garda Síochána, Health Service Executive, National Ambulance Service and Irish Aviation Authority (IAA). Students from NUIG’s College of Hotel Management took on the varied roles of passengers, relatives and press. A man in his 60’s died after the flight on which he was travelling made an emergency medical diversion to Shannon Airport yesterday. The man was a passenger on a Royal Jordanian flight which was enroute from Chicago to Amman. The Boeing  jet was about 200 kilometres northwest of Shannon when the crew advised controllers of the medical emergency. HSE ambulance paramedics and a doctor were waiting for the flight when it touched down. The passenger was  pronounced dead shortly afterwards. The man’s body was removed to University Hospital Limerick for a post mortem examination.

People always ask Margaretta D’Arcy how did she become an anti-war activist? In her new book, Ireland’s Guantanamo Granny, the Galway-based activist answers the question by showing how her early experiences of war motivated her to campaign for peace. “I’m nearly 82 and not many people will remember the effect of World War II. My family had been living in Dublin but when I was about four or five, my father was transferred. He was a civil servant with the Department of Agriculture and we were to go and live in England,” she says. “A couple of days later came the news about the beginning of the war. The whole of London was like a war zone, with all these barrage balloons and sirens going off.
