Two new garda recruits got quite a surprise when they inspected Shannon Airport’s VIP room today (Tuesday). Gardaí Jordan Perez and Ceejay McArdle a duo with their own heroic stories, got an insight into how it’s possible to meet just about anyone – including their hero, Munster and Ireland rugby star CJ Stander at the airport. Ceejay (4), from Castleblaney, County Monaghan and Jordan (8), from Sixmilebridge, were deployed to Shannon to assist in security checks for the day and when they checked the VIP room they found the internatinal rugby player. The special security officers were detailed to the airport as part of an ongoing community initiative by the Garda Relations Bureau (GRB). Ceejay, who is undergoing intense treatment for leukaemia, last year became an Garda Siochana’ s youngest ever member and this weekend Jordan, who is wheelchair bound with muscular dystrophy, joined him on the very special beat courtesy of Chief Superintendent John Kerin and Superintendent Brendan McDonagh. …

The UK delivered the biggest increase in passenger numbers of any of Shannon Airport’s markets in the first half of 2016, figures show. Passenger numbers released by the airport today show that UK market, including London services, was up by 9% to 362,242 from January to the end of June compared to the same period last year. Overall, passenger numbers were up 4% to 791,155, with a healthy increase (5%) also in another key market, the US. The growth comes off the back of a 5% rise in passengers in 2014, which saw numbers climb by 22% in total from what they were when the airport was separated in 2013. AN exhibition celebrating the career of Clare Champion photographer John Kelly goes on display at Shannon Airport from this Friday and will remain on show throughout the month of August. The exhibition, Between You, Me & The Wall, was previously on display in Glór last year and drew on his 25 years at work in The Clare Champion and is now being brought to this second venue, in conjunction with Shannon Airport. Speaking this week, John said he had really enjoyed selecting the work that features in the exhibition. “I even found stuff I had forgotten I had. It’s nice to go back and see how things have changed, see how people have changed, cars have changed, hairstyles have changed, attitudes have changed; everything has changed in 25 years.” When he entered newspaper photography in the early ’90s, the technology being used was wildly different to today. “We started off in the dark room, shooting all black and white film, …

Minister Paschal Donohue has come under fire from a local lobby group over the use of Shannon Airport by US military troops in the wake of the Nice attack. Shannonwatch, which is campaigning for an end to the military use of Shannon Airport, has taken issue with  Minister Donohue over his defence of the use of the airport by US troops. Minister Donohoe said a careful response is needed to terrorism attacks like  in Nice where 84 people were killed. However, Shannonwatch claimed that “ferrying armed troops to the Middle East through Shannon Airport to continue the cycles of war and violence isn’t a calm or measured response”. Minister Donohoe said the Tánaiste, Frances Fitzgerald, had met with the Garda Commissioner on Friday last and added that gardaí are prepared to tackle and prevent such attacks here. “It’s so important now that the response back from all of us isn’t a cycle that can harden the worst impulses and lock …

A 74-year-old peace activist has described as “unconstitutional” bail conditions banning him from entering Clare with the exception of court appearances. Colm Roddy, of Bayside Walk, Sutton, Dublin 13 appeared before Ennis District Court this week where he attempted to have his “onerous” bail conditions, which he says he signed under protest, made more lenient. Mr Roddy, along with Dave Donnellan, 56, of Reuben Street, Rialto in Dublin, who was also in court on Wednesday and made a similar application, have both been charged in relation to an alleged incursion at Shannon Airport. It is alleged that they both caused criminal damage to a perimeter fence at Shannon Airport on May 25 of this year. Inspector Tom Kennedy informed the court that the gardaí are awaiting instructions from the Director of Public Prosecution in relation to the case. Bail conditions, including that the pair stay away from Clare, were imposed in May at Gort District Court by Judge James Faughnan …

A US bound flight turned around over the Atlantic yesterday afternoon and diverted to Shannon Airport after a passenger on board fell ill. United Airlines flight UA-914 was travelling from Paris to Washington and was about 600 kilometres west of the Ireland when the crew declared a medical emergency and sought clearance from air traffic controllers to divert to Shannon. The Boeing 777-200 jet landed at 3.40pm and was met at the terminal by HSE ambulance paramedics. The patient was assessed and stabilised at the scene for being removed to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. Flight 914 continued its journey a shor time later.

SHANNON Group and Origin Enterprises chairman Rose Hynes has been chosen as one of Ireland’s most powerful female business leaders of the year at the annual WXN Women’s Executive Network awards. The awards celebrate the accomplishments of women in business in Ireland and were celebrated at the Network’s Leadership Summit and Awards Gala in Dublin on Thursday. Ms Hynes was one of four Davy Business Leaders award winners in the ‘Most Powerful Women Top 25 Award Winners for 2016’. The New Quay native, who lives in Limerick, played a central role in the separation of Shannon Airport from the State airport’s group in 2013, as she headed up the Aviation Business Development Task Force to report into the Government Steering Group on the future direction of the airport and Shannon Development. She was then appointed chairman of the Shannon Airport Authority to oversee the running of the airport as an independent entity until it became part of Shannon Group when it was …
