  Fears have been expressed that a person will suffer a serious injury on a public pathway in Shannon, which has been extensively flooded as a result of a major unresolved leak for months. Residents in Shannon are up in arms of the delay in fixing a leak on a pathway between Dun na Rí and Cluain Aoibheann, which is also used by householders in Rineanna View. Rineanna View resident, Kathleen Doherty warned the huge pool of water, which contained mud and other undesirable material, was a serious health hazard, particularly for young children if they slipped and fell trying to walk through it without realising how deep it was. Ms Doherty complained she couldn’t use this pathway to walk her dogs and can’t understand why it has taken to long to fix. CREE based Clean Ireland Recycling have made an appeal to An Bord Pleanála following a decision by Clare County Council to grant planning permission to Emerald Waste Company for a Pay To Use (PTU) waste compactor at Texaco Service Station in Shannon. In its submission to the authority it states, “Clare County Council’s decision to allow this PTU to operate without a pay by weight mechanism, without provision of a brown bin, without a system to track customers (eg smartcards) and without a customer charter will negatively impact on the DECLG’s (Department of Environment, Community and Local Government)  attempts to regulate PTUs. We expect that An Bord Pleanála will have access to the new regulations prior to making a final decision on this application and will be better placed to see the potential impact of a decision to allow this development to proceed as per the applicant’s proposal.” They also raised concerns about the potential safety impact of the development. …

Shannon-based Reagecon Diagnostics has won the Best Established SME Award at the national final of the 2014 Ulster Bank Business Achievers Awards. The awards, which were presented at the Mansion House in Dublin, toasted the cream of the crop in Irish business, crowning 10 finalists from across the country. The awards, in association with the Irish Independent, Enterprise Ireland and InterTradeIreland saw as record 627 businesses compete. Reagecon Diagnostics develops, manufactures, and distributes physical and chemical standards and reagents for laboratories worldwide. The company also offers customized manufacturing, training, and technical services and supplies its products in 150 countries worldwide. Reagecon Diagnostic is the largest producer of calibration standards in the world.

ELEMENT Six are taking on another 40 staff in Shannon and say that there is likely to be scope for further growth due to a €25 million capital investment and the relocation of €20 million of assets to the Shannon plant. Five years ago the company announced redundancies and the overall number of Shannon employees dropped to 250. However it has since rebounded to around 360 and is now set to hit 400. ENDA Kenny is to face protests when he comes to Clare on Monday, with the revised water charges still the subject of much public anger. Gardaí met earlier this week to make plans for Monday, when the Taoiseach is set to visit TTM Healthcare at Ballymaley, speak at the Shannon Chamber president’s lunch in Dromoland and open Genworth’s new business centre in Shannon. There is speculation that jobs will be announced at TTM Healthcare and while there were reports that new jobs would also be announced at Genworth, a company spokesman told The Clare Champion this is not the case. It is understood that another Shannon company, which is due to take on new staff in 2015, are also hopeful that the Taoiseach will visit them. Essential maintenance works will result in the disruption of the water supply to the Westpark Development and to a number of businesses within the Shannon Free Zone West industrial estate in Shannon, for approximately six hours on Saturday next, November 1. Clare County Council, as agents of Irish Water, has outlined that the work will impact on quite a number of major industries from around  8.30am to 2.30pm.

Over 50 firefighters will display their cleaning skills at seven locations throughout the county to raise money for children with special needs. The Clare Fire and Rescue Service has teamed up with Clare Crusaders Children’s Clinic to organise a charity car wash this Saturday from 10am to 4pm. People can get their car washed outside fire stations in Ennis, Shannon, Scariff, Kilrush, Church Street car park in Ennistymon; SuperValu, Killaloe and the Square, Kilkee. All donations will go to the clinic. Senior assistant fire chief, Tom Burke, said the fire service is delighted to be associated with the clinic, which provides hundreds of children in the county with free therapy. He encouraged anyone who needs their vehicle washed to consider supporting the event.
