A SPOKESMAN for Shannon Airport said this morning that following efforts throughout the night all flights were continuing to operate at the Clare airport, despite the severe snow that struck the county yesterday evening. Met Éireann have warned that a severe storm is set to hit western counties, including Clare from early afternoon, with winds of up to 130km and heavy rain forecast. Clare County Council says that the worst conditions will be along the coast and they have advised people not to venture out or to drive on exposed roads while these conditions prevail.    

CLARE is expected to get its most significant jobs boost for a number of years within the next 12 weeks. While there is some uncertainty about the exact number of jobs that are to be created, it’s believed that it will be in excess of 500, possibly even in the region of 700. The company in question is a multinational based in Shannon and it is understood they have won a significant amount of new business and need new workers. This week, some informed sources said they expect the jobs will be announced within the first quarter of the year. It is understood that there are likely to be a mix of highly skilled and unskilled positions created. The company that is set to create the jobs has been based in Shannon for a number of years. They already employ several hundred staff and have increased headcount in recent times, while management have previously said that Ireland is a very …

RADICAL British Muslim cleric Anjem Choudary has said Ireland is now seen as a legitimate target for attacks by certain terror groups due to the American use of Shannon. Mr Choudary was a founder member of the organisation al-Muhajiroun, which was subsequently banned in Britain under anti terrorist legislation. He is a strong proponet of Sharia law and has been vocal in his support of those who carried out the 9/11 attacks. On Cork radio station Red FM this morning he spoke about the situation in France, and when asked about whether people at Shannon Airport and other strategic parts of the country should be concerned about attacks he said, “I think people should always be concerned because there is a war taking place, that war is a global war taking place on every level.” Asked if Al Qaeda and other radicals now see Ireland as a legitimate target because of the use of Shannon he replied. “It’s not (just) now that …

THE crises that have struck Russia in recent months are being put forward as the reasons that Shannon-based Transaero Engineering Ireland had to seek the protection of the courts this week. The aircraft maintenance company entered an examinership process on Monday with the aim of securing its future. It currently has 230 employees and around 40 contract workers. Examinership gives struggling companies breathing space as it gives them protection from creditors for 100 days, during which time the court-appointed examiner, in this case Michael McAteer of Grant Thornton, reports back to the court with recommendations. While the majority of businesses that enter examinership do continue to trade after successfully exiting, the examiner has to find there is a reasonable prospect of it becoming viable. Formerly Air Atlanta Aero Engineering, the company came under Russian ownership when it was purchased by Transaero Airlines almost three years ago. Transaero, which employs 235 people at Shannon, is unable to meet its debts because of economic difficulties in Russia and by its Russian parent company, the High Court was told today this week. Mr Justice Bernard Barton appointed Grant Thornton chartered accountant, Michael McAteer as interim examiner to Transaero Engineering Ireland (TEI), a globally approved maintenance, repair and aircraft overhaul company. Barrister James Doherty told the court that TEI, which had a turnover of €27 million in 2010/11, was an Irish-registered company, which had been generating relatively modest profit and had been taken over by Transaero Airlines in 2012. He said increased pressures had been put on TEI’s profitability by its parent company, which had required it to carry out work for it on a cost only basis, which had eaten into its profits.   Fears have been expressed that a person will suffer a serious injury on a public pathway in Shannon, which has been extensively flooded as a result of a major unresolved leak for months. Residents in Shannon are up in arms of the delay in fixing a leak on a pathway between Dun na Rí and Cluain Aoibheann, which is also used by householders in Rineanna View. Rineanna View resident, Kathleen Doherty warned the huge pool of water, which contained mud and other undesirable material, was a serious health hazard, particularly for young children if they slipped and fell trying to walk through it without realising how deep it was. Ms Doherty complained she couldn’t use this pathway to walk her dogs and can’t understand why it has taken to long to fix. CREE based Clean Ireland Recycling have made an appeal to An Bord Pleanála following a decision by Clare County Council to grant planning permission to Emerald Waste Company for a Pay To Use (PTU) waste compactor at Texaco Service Station in Shannon. In its submission to the authority it states, “Clare County Council’s decision to allow this PTU to operate without a pay by weight mechanism, without provision of a brown bin, without a system to track customers (eg smartcards) and without a customer charter will negatively impact on the DECLG’s (Department of Environment, Community and Local Government)  attempts to regulate PTUs. We expect that An Bord Pleanála will have access to the new regulations prior to making a final decision on this application and will be better placed to see the potential impact of a decision to allow this development to proceed as per the applicant’s proposal.” They also raised concerns about the potential safety impact of the development. …
