THERE was some concern last week after people working on surveying for the new Shannon flood relief scheme were seen taking photos of local houses. Councillor Donna McGettigan said, “A few people had said that they had seen people taking pictures of their houses. My Mum went out and asked them had they ID, they said they didn’t, and she said you really should have ID. I rang our Shannon MD office about it, because there are so many scams happening.” She said there had been some communication, but not everyone had been informed. “One resident sent me a letter that he received. There are letters going around, but not everybody received the letters and people are suspicious of these people taking pictures of their house.” She said people would be accepting if they were aware of the reasons. “If they knew what it was about it’d be okay, they’re not asking to come in or anything, but they are …

THERE has been concern about the level of anti social behaviour at the Tír na nÓg playground in Shannon, close to the Leisure Centre. Lesleyanne Casey’s six year old son was there on Monday with his father and had to leave due to some verbal abuse from teenagers. Her little boy has autism and was very upset by the incident. “He doesn’t understand why they did what they did yesterday,” said Lesleyanne on Tuesday. He was brought to the playground around 2.30pm and his father soon had to talk to some of the teenagers, who are too old for the facility, there. “It started off with a lot of swearing and roaring, what they were going to do to each other’s mothers, this kind of thing. He said to them lads, can ye keep it down, there are kids around. They just started sniggering.” She said they were using the derogatory N-word, which her son, not knowing its connotations, repeated. …

CLARE Youth Service are helping to smooth the move to secondary school for sixth class pupils. CYS are offering a new transition to first year programme for students in schools across Shannon and Ennis. The aim of the programme is to address many of the concerns and issues experienced by those making the move to secondary school.  There are limited spaces available. “This programmes aims to provide a safe space for the young people to have fun and explore the changes that lie ahead of their move to secondary school.  The programme covers things such as hopes and fears for the coming year, reading timetables, taking notes and good sleep habits among other things. There is also an emphasis on tips for minding our minds and our wellbeing,” explains a spokesperson for CYS. The young people taking part will also get to sample a selection of Clare Youth Service activities such as the very creative Scribble Bots! The programme runs …

TRADE union Fórsa, which represents Aer Lingus cabin crew said it was appalled at Aer Lingus management’s decision not to attend a Labour Court hearing on the closure of the airline’s Shannon base. T The union had referred the issue to the Labour Court after thetwo sides failed to reach agreement over staff transfers and redundancy terms in a series of direct talks. Fórsa said company management has refused to attend, and had emailed cabin crew ordering them to apply to transfer to Dublin or Cork, or opt for redundancy on what the union calls “take it or leave it” terms. Fórsa official Ian McDonnell accused the company of disrespecting staff, as well as the Labour Court. “Aer Lingus has received hundreds of thousands of taxpayers’ Euro throughout the Covid crisis. Owen Ryan TWELVE years after first being elected to Clare County Council, Cratloe’s PJ Ryan became mayor of Clare last Friday afternoon. An independent Councillor, he is very much of the Fianna Fáil gene pool, and first stood for election for that party, staying in the race until the final count in 2004. However, when the party hierarchy decided his face didn’t fit five years later, he decided to go it alone. “They had this selection thing, they sent people down from Dublin to select the candidates, people that knew nothing about the candidates or what they were involved in. Michael Begley and myself lost out, so I decided I’d go the independent route. I’ve been elected three times as an independent.” Both sides of his family were rooted in Fianna Fáil, but he says he didn’t seriously look at going back into the party. “No, the thing about it is, why would you change a winning team?” he quips. …

Local company grateful for support from community and organisations for three-night production. CONFINED and restricted for so long, Muse Productions focused on what they could do rather than what they couldn’t, and gave an outdoor performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on last Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at the Town Park. Attendance each night was capped at 100, and thankfully the weather was dry. “It went really, really well. There was a great turnout, the weather held off for us, so yeah, we were blessed,” said Martin McNeilis, who played Oberon in the production, while his wife and three children also had roles in it. “Obviously Covid regulations allow for 50 indoors and 100 outdoors, so we cordoned off a section of the park and we only allowed 100 people in. “Some people passed by, or hung around, or stood by and watched a bit and moved on, but the audience was 100,” said Martin. Proposal to extend site and create conditions to double the school population GAELSCOIL Donncha Rua has lodged a planning application for a new development, which would see the school’s numbers doubling. A design statement accompanying the planning application says the proposed Gaelscoil Donncha Rua would be a replacement primary school for 70 pupils on the site of the existing temporary accommodation school in Shannon. It is envisaged the existing site of 0.55 acres be extended to a total of 1.94 acres to accommodate the new building. Projected enrollment once the new school is completed is 140 pupils. The statement notes the site forms part of a landbank owned by Clare County Council that is currently undergoing development for parklands and public amenity areas. “The area of the site outside of the existing school boundaries is currently in use as amenity wetlands,” the statement notes, adding that “The existing school site has an area of 0.55 acres currently and consists of …

TULLYGLASS based singer and songwriter David Hope is releasing a new single Lovers’ Leap, which is something of a love letter to his native county. “It was inspired by a trip down to Loop Head. I’d spent a fair bit of time down there as a young lad, fishing and all that sort of stuff. “I got a bit captivated by the sea stack, which is right at the end fo the peninsula. It’s called Lovers’ Leap and there’s a whole mythology about that, Cú Chulainn being chased and jumping away from a randy witch as she was chasing him around the country! “She fell down to her death and became this wave that was sinking ships and things like that. As a songwriter you start latching onto these ideas, and, you know, we’re lucky to be from a beautiful place, so that’s where the song came from,” he says.
